we're slowly inching towards defining a specification and implementing it so that we can build our very own federated discord-type chatting program :)
doesn't mean we want it to be a clone, though! we would like to take some...creative liberties down the line but that's for the future.
For now, if you're interested in working on this and wanna pick up some low-hanging fruit in rust or want to write documentation and specifications, we'd love to have u around!
also, feel free to leave questions! I've been meaning to write up an FAQ anyways.

polyproto is the WIP federation protocol that aims to be simple and build on existing, robust tech and protocols instead of re-inventing the wheel, while avoiding complexity from i.e state-resolution or extension fragmentation.
If that at all sounds interesting to you, check out the (WIP!) specs at polyproto.org and talk with us!
Polyproto is also on fedi at @polyproto, and is part of the @polyphonychat project which eventually aims to use this protocol to build a chat platform.

This means: no more losing friends or followers if your old homeserver sunsets. Feel free to migrate to another homeserver at any time, even if your old homeserver has shut down ages ago."
Seems like a very new project, but this is an intriguing set of goals.

Is current World being more interested in creating duplicates of well known protocols instead of join efforts to evolve the good ones? I have mixed feelings about that.

Don’t get me wrong, I think #Stoat chat is cool, but I don’t think anything can be a sustainable #Discord replacement until we have something federated. I know they’ve not ruled it out, and it’s FOSS, but still.
Personally putting all my eggs in the #Polyproto basket. #revolt

if ur interested in working on a federated alternative to discord, which keeps the user in control of their account/identity and doesn't have a complex DAG and uses tried-and-tested tech instead of re-inventing the wheel, I invite u to check out and perhaps contribute to polyproto.org !
it's a project that I've been involved in for a bit and been following for much longer, we want to create something that can provide a real alternative to Discord without compromising on user experience and control for the end user :)

A friendly reminder that, while there is no server software available yet (WIP) for #polyproto, there's already an SDK, allowing you to generate spec-compliant polyproto ID-Certificates. And because polyproto uses X.509, you can use practically any modern computer to parse and display these ID-Certs, as well as perform basic validation for them.

Luckily this shouldn't be too far from happening. It's just that I can only work at a relative snails' pace, given that I already code in Rust 40h week and then have to muster the energy to do even more of that for my private projects

Oh, what also just comes to mind is the #Polyproto protocol. I think it may have been created in reaction to ActivityPub's complexity and issues around identity, not sure.
And another protocol in the works, inspired by AP is #Versia.

@saul we’re more of a facilitator for that kind of thing. Weird can help make the initial connection, but the message transmission would be left to any of a number of E2EE messengers we’d defer to (by integration), like #matrix, #signal, #Veilid, #polyproto etc.
