"#DollyParton, the #singer who died Tuesday at age 80 after a brief bout with cancer, was mourned around the world as a stellar #songwriter, consummate country hitmaker, savvy #entrepreneur and generous #philanthropist.
In #Jewish circles, she was also remembered as the inspiration for #PJLibrary, a program that sends free children’s #books to Jewish families in order to foster Jewish values and traditions.
In 2015, when #HaroldGrinspoon launched PJ Library, he took a page from #Parton, who a decade earlier had started #ImaginationLibrary, a #literacy program that mails free #childrensbooks to families across the #US.
After hearing Parton interviewed about the program, #Grinspoon, a philanthropist in and out of the Jewish community, signed on as a sponsor of the Imagination Library in Western #Massachusetts, where he lives."

"Most people spend their later years looking back. #HaroldGrinspoon has spent his reinventing himself.
The businessman became a #philanthropist. The philanthropist discovered #Jewish children’s #books and created #PJLibrary. In his late 80s, he became a sculptor after a cherry tree fell in his yard.
Now, as he turns 97, #Grinspoon is reflecting on the unexpected pivots that have defined both his life and his approach to Jewish giving.
Known for innovative programs like PJ Library — which engages young Jewish families with monthly deliveries of age-appropriate #childrensbooks and #music — #Grinspoon and his eponymous foundation have focused on programs that, in the spirit of the real estate business that made his fortune, build Jewish habits, institutions and relationships that he hopes will outlast him."

'Nearly 400 millionaires and #billionaires call for higher taxes on super-rich
(This article is more than 5 months old)'Mark #Ruffalo, Brian #Eno and Abigail #Disney sign letter timed for #WEF in Davos saying wealthy are buying #political influence'
'Nearly 400 millionaires and billionaires from 24 countries are calling on global leaders to increase taxes on the super-rich, amid growing concern that the wealthiest in society are buying political influence.
'An open letter, released to coincide with the World Economic Forum in Davos, calls on global leaders attending this week’s conference to close the widening gap between the super-rich and everyone else.
'The letter, signed by luminaries including the #actor and film-maker Mark Ruffalo, the #musician Brian Eno and the film producer and #philanthropist Abigail Disney, says extreme #wealth is polluting politics, driving social exclusion and fuelling the #climate emergency.
'“A handful of global #oligarchs with extreme wealth have bought up our #democracies; taken over our #governments; gagged the freedom of our #media; placed a stranglehold on #technology and innovation; deepened #poverty and social exclusion; and accelerated the breakdown of our planet,” it reads. “What we treasure, rich and poor alike, is being eaten away by those intent on growing the gulf between their vast power and everyone else.
'“We all know this. When even millionaires, like us, recognise that extreme wealth has cost everyone else everything else, there can be no doubt that society is dangerously teetering off the edge of a precipice.”'

Theodor Christlieb, London Lutheran pastor, on medical missions, celebrating that Christian dispensaries were spreading across Asia. These hospitals “break the way to faith in the gospel of Christian love.” This love seeks out and helps the needy.
Today, we hear of hospitals being bombed, and ask why the hospital was on the side of the bad guys.
How can we break the way to faith?
