Yesterday was a volunteer workday - a very warm and exhausting volunteer workday. We are moving into flash drought with dry conditions and hot conditions that will hang around as long as the 'western high' remains. The soil was so hard and dry we had to use wrecking bars to break it up before digging.
At home the pollinator gardens are on a water as needed cycle (roughly once a week). The trigger is if the native plants remain wilted overnight, a signal they cannot keep up with the conditions. One that never seems to wilt, the Purple Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) - it wants to take over the world in this heat.
