  1. My chilli 'babies' are growing up & some needed repotting. Half of them will be going outside at the end of May while the other half will stay on the window sill as an insurance policy. Having read the RHS guide to growing them I've learnt that they can be overwintered indoors rather than having to start from scratch again next year. This news made me smile no end 🙂

  4. #inMyGarden just a single spectacular flamboyant bloom from our clematis this year so far - but it is one more than last year! So gay!

  8. What is going to happen this Spring with the blossom buds on our fruit trees? This is a Williams pear. At this stage of March last year, the weather turned arctic as the flowers opened, there were no insects to cross-fertilise, and consequently we had very few pears later. Now we’re wondering if there will be a repeat in 2025 as we enter another arctic-cold few days. Fingers crossed by the time the blossom is fully open, the air will be warmer and we will see bees and wasps visiting us.

  9. A full moon rises as the sun does this January morning. In the garden approaching the new ground floor extension to our 18th century welsh cottage, everything is waiting for spring.

  10. We had a blast of summer yesterday, & with it an influx of butterflies into our garden. I was excited to see the only Painted Lady this year, & a Red Admiral - both species Vanessa. I got my phone out & got a quick shot. But when Iooked at the photo the Painted Lady isn’t there! The butterfly here is definitely a Comma!? Maybe the Painted Lady flew off seconds before I pointed my camera?

  11. My husband’s garden project is done - a new gate entrance, path and wall to our house. he’s put his back into it, so much muscle power 💪

  12. In an older bed #InMyGarden we’ve had another good crop of asparagus for 6 weeks which now sadly we need to leave alone - soon it will be a forest of asparagus ferns 😍

  13. Didn’t we once call it ‘Flaming June’? It proved to be not a good month to re-start our veggie patch #InMyGarden. The young climbing beans have suffered in the relentless northerly winds.

  14. My husband’s been working hard in the garden, now that the building work is behind us, including tidying up the top level, just in time for the pom-pom viburnum bush to look its best 😎 in the sunshine

For small gardens like ours, here’s one way of making the most of space - instead of a privet/beech hedge (unproductive) we’ve got a very productive damson hedge with companion tree, which looks like it’s going to be exceptionally fruity this year.

  17. It’s late in the season, but #today ‘s autumn sunshine warming the gravel has attracted this beautiful warm-orange Comma known universally as
    Polygonia c-album
female I think, but of the late season hutchinsoni variety - maybe it was bred on our nettle patch (we have plenty on our field boundary!)

  19. At last a beautiful Comma sighted, the first of the summer brood.
I’ve read its numbers made a come-back in UK over the last 50 years, as it changed its preferred plant from hops to nettles. It’s one of the Polygonia butterflies, a name which means ‘many angles’ - as we can see on the edges of its wings.

  23. Good morning Mastofolk!
I’m wondering how today is shaping up for y’all? It’s a windy Wednesday here in N Wales, & I’ve been out into the garden to check see if the fruit blossom is surviving. This gratuitous selfie is taken beside an ornamental pear - if the wind’s not too fierce in a few days time, it will be in full bloom & stunning. Simple pleasures

  24. It’s been a colder Spring than in recent years here, making me spend less time in the garden than last year - plus a good third of it is about to be demolished to make way for some new building work. So there’s less happening than I expected at the start of March. But come rain come shine there are one or two plants guaranteed to put on a show with stunning warm colours. This is one - Erysimum or wallflowers - #InMyGardenToday #GayGarden #GayGardener #gardens #SpringFlowers #wallflowers #spring

  26. #SilentSunday
Time in the garden, drawn by the mahonia aquifolium (or is it a berberis? there seems to be some confusion between the two) which forms part of the roadside hedge - totally covered in typical spring time yellow.

A few minutes there, seems a good way of transitioning from the silence of the #QuakerMeeting, back into the world.

It’s a very rainbow week here in the Vale of Clwyd - with our view from our garden over the valley below we get to see huge ones often a full arc stretching over from one side to the other. This one had its base in the valley bottom and then reached up into the sky

  28. I’d love to know for sure what this extraterrestrial-like creature is. I think it’s either a white ermine or satin moth, but better lepidopterists than me might correct me. I took the poorer photo looking at the moth’s face and comb-like antennae yesterday - a difficult angle as it was sitting on the garage door. I took the other photo earlier of another example, sitting on the floor.

  30. I suspect this Small Tortoiseshell has been around the block quite a while. #today after days of wind and rain, it settled on a wall warmed by the sun, seeming not to have strength to take off while I moved in very close. The last survivor of Aglais urticae this season, I suspect

  31. Few butterflies #InMyGarden this week - the changeable temperature & rain showers that the start of autumn has brought has meant just brief appearances from a few whites, and this bright Red Admiral taking advantage of a sunny spell to feed

  32. #SilentSunday Well, it was meant to be. But earlier on, my usual hour in the #quaker meeting was anything but. It was a trial run in a new venue on an urban main street, on a hot summer Sunday. It sounded like every biker in N Wales was riding & roaring through the town. So much for Thich Nhat Hanh’s advice, to let the sounds I hear draw me into stillness. 😖
Now I’m back to our quiet country lane, & the peaceful musk mallow fill the hedgerows.

  33. Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) is in decline in Wales/England. Checking my daily records of sightings #InMyGarden in 2022 only one or two butterflies whereas in past years there were 12-15 when lavender in full flower. #today lavender is in full flower: only one sighting so far 😩. So no recovery prob bec again the nettles they need in nearby fields are disappearing partly due to drought.

  35. Probably my fav moth seen #InMyGarden - though rare - is the Gold Spot. I’m looking out for it as September approaches. I did get a pic of one last year, as you see. It has a great name. Plusia festucae - presumably bec it looks like a rich jewel (as in Greek ‘plousios’, rich) & likes a habitat of tufted-grass (festuca).
It also likes damp habitats, exactly as my garden is now after weeks of rainy days. 🌧️

  36. The garden has been buzzing this week since we got back from holiday. Bees buzzing in great numbers of course. But more butterflies than we’ve seen all the year. Especially numerous are Red Admirals almost dancing in flight!

  38. #InMyGarden this week the rows of lavender are at their peak, overwhelming with their intense colour and scent - giving me what I know they would - the longing to be back in Provence, where I once dreamt I might settle.
Today there are Meadow Browns & Small Tortoiseshells flitting over them from morning till evening
