The Wall: A Poem About Inheritance, Trauma, and Parenthood

    Don’t worry my sons,
    you won’t be like me.

    In the DBT class
    every tuesday night with
    other healing pincushions
relearning how to think and feel
    each basic reality, after life,
    the tornado, mangled you
    in its timeless wake.

Or sitting on the High Bridge
    jealous of city lights
neon and edged along skyscraper spines,
    alive and bright
    making me ponder how long
that suicidal fall might take till the mud
of the Mississippi lets me finally, truly, rest.

    The history of trauma,
pain, suffering, so focused it narrows
to a beam of pure shadow
    slicing, cutting your heart.
Abuse is a mad, blind surgeon
    stitching its legacy in
    depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

    It dissected me.
    My broken parents tried
in their masonry, but legions of cracks
    wormed through their cement.
    A malformed barrier hoping
    it would make me happy,
but I was forever diluted, always thirsty.

    Do not worry my sons
    I will be the wall
    the blood-born mortar.
It is hard, lonely, a monster bending my shoulders
    the weight’s a black hole,
a string of dead stars, further, heavier
    a million metaphors deep.

    Still, now, it’ll end here
    with me.
