I've managed to divert a parcel to a local pickup point so it's not going to be stolen from outside my front door. Not sure why this wasn't an option when I placed the order, it is sometimes, but so far, local pickup has worked out really well.

Speculation follows:
Australia Post may be using contractors, who use sub-contractors who may use subcontractors who get paid, not for their time, but per delivery. Or per load.
Which would bias heavily towards the trashy kind of service that you describe.Anyone from #AusPost, or with knowledge of how #AustraliaPost manages #ParcelDelivery, in the house?
