After Monday's news that our small colony of penguins had been wiped out by a dog attack, it's good to hear some positive wildlife stories from the Dunedin area.
Otago's pakake (NZ sea lion) population is slowly growing and on its way to becoming a breeding colony. For DOC to declare that status, at least 35 pups must be born for five consecutive seasons.
Coyly, the story only refers to "more than 35 pups" being born this year.

Dunedin has experienced another sea lion occupation, this time in a fish and chip shop in St Kilda. It was blocking their entrance so staff tried to tempt her outside with fish, but that didn't work.
“It just kind of lay there and didn’t really do much.”
There's a happy ending because DOC came and moved the animal.
