Abstract
"Shooting ranges and military training fields, including warfare-impacted areas, have been widely recognized as environmentally impacted zones by inorganic and organic #contamination, such as #HeavyMetals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or explosive-related compounds. However, the possible contamination by #plastics and #microplastics in soil has been widely overlooked despite potential plastic sources, such as #ShotgunCartridges, #PlasticWads or #landmines. Due to how these activities occur, plastics have remained in the field for decades or centuries, favoring their conversion from macro to microplastics, polluting the soil and water resources. Moreover, shooting and recreational activities such as #airsoft or #paintball practices could also be a substantial source of plastics to ecosystems; once shot, pellets can have conventional or biodegradable plastics in their composition, and there left in the environment, favouring impacts on soil properties. Although some initiatives have emerged to avoid the use of single-use plastics in shotgun ammunition, alternative materials (biodegradable plastics) can also be a potential risk, favouring the heavy metal bioavailability of shot pellets. These emerging pollutants should also be considered in these areas to understand if they could be a potential source of micro- and nanoplastics to the environment and, therefore, an environmental concern that requires changes at industrial and regulatory levels."Read more:

Anyhow, a month or so ago I played in my first national competition - the Major League Paintball Tampa Bay Open, playing Div 5. We, Bear Ridge, took home 2nd place. We're headed to the Mid-Atlantic Open in Dover in a couple of weeks.
This past weekend I played in a regional tournament for my other team, Afterlife.

I know this is well outside my normal tech-focused stuff, but… after 20 years in storage, I busted out the first #paintball marker (the black Tippmann 68 Carbine) I bought (1995-ish) and the last one I bought (2k3 WGP Autococker Prostock) before I stopped playing regularly back in 2004. I am rebuilding them to play with our boys. I also have a new electro pneumatic marker (Dye Rize CZR), but the old school mechanical ones are making a comeback, and that 'cocker can still hang with moderns.

Did you ever want to drive a tank?
Well now you can with the only tank and paintball experience available in the Southern Hemisphere as far as I know.The staff will get you safety briefed and they're very patient, if you need a refresher on how something works or if your helmet isn't right they'll fix it for you. Do make sure you're happy with your helmet before you go out there, because otherwise you won't have as fun a time. I managed the first time out but I made sure it was tighter the second time.
These locally designed, locally custom built (you don't think of Moora as the home of tank construction) mini tanks have been purpose built. If you know how to skid steer you'll be right, and if you don't, like me the complete novice, you will soon be put right by the lovely staff.
This place has only been open since April 2024 and we only saw the sign by accident on our way back from astrophotography doings. My husband is a long time amateur war historian and I enjoy the odd wargame so it felt very empowering to hop into the little tank and zoom around the obstacle course to familiarise ourselves with the terrain and handling with some of our friends.
Even the obstacle course is a lot of fun - no guns, just you and your friendly little tank negotiating trenches, climbing hillocks and manoeuvering about. I found it very empowering, and now have a greater understanding of the advantages that armoured cavalry bring to the battlefield. It feels like you're living history.
The tanks are noisy, so you might want to take the proffered ear protection. They're highly manoeuvrable, fast and yes, they will go down that ditch (excellent cover) and up that hillock with nary a pause.
There's snacks available, and shade and tables in the bush setting.
If you choose to do the combat, the paintball guns are easy to operate and also excellent fun. They have quite the range - remember not to fire unless you're more than eight metres away because they can pack a hit. Environmentally safe paint rounds are used.
It is super fun and the staff are very accommodating.
There's also a firing range that you can use to get used to the paintball gun.
So check it out, it's unique, and the staff are great and the mini tanks are superb.
