  6. If you are not familiar with overlays, or need a refresher of the other significant reasons to avoid them, check out the Overlay Fact Sheet, which now has over 1000 signatories (!).

From the Fact Sheet: "Overlays are a broad term for technologies that aim to improve the accessibility of a website. They apply third-party source code (typically JavaScript) to make improvements to the front-end code of the website."

  8. Why do #overlays suck in React?

I haven't thought about overlays recently, but @karlgroves of AFixt has enumerated the technical reasons that they fail on sites built using popular JavaScript frameworks like React.

I found the details super interesting and persuasive.

Not that I needed additional convincing: when overlays aren't failing directly, their owners are suing leaders in the accessibility community and misleading their clients.

  10. Specifically #AudioEye (best known for SLAPP suits versus useful tooling) and #UserWay (best known for destroying the Level Access brand). Anyway, utter disappointment to see #CSUNATC giving them a platform.

  15. RE: mastodon.social/@accesstive_/1

Just a few months ago I found this company might have been fabricating reviews and ratings:
    adrianroselli.com/2025/07/acce

Oh, and its #overlay doesn’t work.

So you know, buyer beware because #overlays are not solutions.

  22. "The 'accessibility overlay' we talk about and condemn is a combination of three possible problems: [...] Each condition is a different type of flaw. The first may still represent perfectly useful tooling, but with an ableist presentation. The second may actually introduce new accessibility errors. The last actively deceives potential customers."
