OpenEd23 Recap
Did you miss out on the Open Education Conference this year or couldn't get to every session because they had 500,000 really cool concurrent things? Never fear! I got you. Well, at least for the sessions I attended.
-
It was an absolute honor to be one of the keynotes at the 2023 @oeglobal conference. The recording and slides of my “Diamond Open Knowledge” talk are now online: https://oeglobal2023.sched.com/event/1SEWo/diamond-open-knowledge #oeglobal23 #openEd23 #diamondOA @creativecommons

@econproph @actualham @lornamcampbell @rajiv @cogdog @billymeinke @Mweller Not sure if anyone replied, or if you found it in the end, but you (rather ironically) already said it without the hash: #OpenEd23
-
And that's a wrap on #OpenEd23 session highlights. If you're keen for all the resources and awesome discussion shared during the conference, I'll be writing up my full notes from the sessions I attended in a blog post on https://EmpoweredOER.com So, keep an eye out for that!

Another #OpenEd23 in the books. It has been a great conference!
-
I have had an amazing time at #OpenEd23, but I am all typed-out, so no more posts from me for awhile. For now, I will be enjoying the last couple of sessions and saving lots of links for later!
-
Now the team is sharing the review process they used to assess the revised open textbook and Spanish translation (critical autoethnography approach). I'll let you watch that section in the recorded version on YouTube tomorrow, though. I hope those attending #OpenEd23 are learning a lot from these amazing sessions!
-
So what did they learn?
Before you start a big translation project, make sure you review all the available materials and get top-down buy-in from faculty first, to ensure the book's use.
It's good to know, though, that even though their book wasn't immediately put into use at Portland State, people are using the textbook (both the revised English version and the Spanish version) widely! That's one great thing about #OER: even if a resource doesn't meet its initial goals locally, it can still have a massive impact in supporting student success elsewhere! #OpenEd23 -
Patricia highlights the processes that were followed during the translation of the open textbook into Spanish, which include multiple revisions routed through separate editors to ensure that there is consistency and clarity in the finished work. #OpenEd23
-
Next up at #OpenEd23, I'm attending "OER Translation Project: Thrills and Spills!" featuring the work that folks from Portland State University did to translate the award-winning open textbook, "Blueprint for Success in College and Career," into Spanish!

Lots of great tips, examples, resources, and descriptions in this presentation from @smithshannonm! I'll leave my play-by-play here to participate in the interactive piece, but kudos to the presenters! #OpenEd23
-
Now back from my 10:30am lunch break at #OpenEd23, I'm attending "Help a Creator Out?! Leaving a Guide for Revising and Remixing OER"
-
Enjoy the last day of #OpenEd23! So many great sessions yet to come! https://openeducationconference.org/2023/program
-
Next up in pre-recorded presentation time at #OpenEd23, I'm watching "Evaluating OER Cohort Impacts in Louisiana," from Elizabeth Kelly and Emily Frank! Because these speakers represent a consortium (LOUIS), they have a unique perspective on grant deployment, project management, and and assessment practices!
-
What I love most about this presentation, though, is how it showcases #OER development, sharing, and support as a normal part of their university's work:
"It's part of our everyday mindset, and we're actively encouraged to think about being open all the time. Treating open courses as equal to [all other] courses results in a more accessible portfolio of learning materials, which can only be a good thing." #OpenEd23 -
Starting up the final day of #OpenEd23 today with some pre-recorded sessions! First of all, University of Edinburgh's "Open for All: Developing an Open Course Creation Workflow" presentation, which has the most amazing production value, in addition to its generally useful tips for those wondering how to create and share open courses https://open.ed.ac.uk/edinburghs-oers/

"I am not aiming for neutrality, or to be objective: I am aiming for justice." -- Jasmine Roberts-Crews in their #OpenEd23 keynote on post-oppositional approach to social justice in #OpenEducation. Plus, bonus chat from @rajiv "Doing this work involves risk, risk (and emotional labour) that is disproportionately borne by marginalized folx."
-
Giving the opening keynote yesterday at #OpenEd23 @[email protected] a huge honour and undoubtedly a career highlight. I had a lot of fun writing this talk and appreciated the charge from the Board to both look back (to celebrate and learn) and to gaze forward. It has been a delight to see the growth in this community and especially meaningful to share this honour with my friend Jasmine Roberts-Crews who gave her fantastic keynote today. Here is a recording of my talk: https://youtu.be/nsZsDeeikWw?si=Iah3QEoaEHNawspu&t=1072
-
There is so much to convey here, so I will note that Jasmine's keynote is being recorded, and I welcome everyone to watch her talk directly once that is posted later this week. This talk is both powerful and personal, and my notes cannot convey all of it. #OpenEd23
-
And it's already time for the second keynote of #OpenEd23, from the incomparable Jasmine Roberts-Crews!
-
Who is attending #OpenEd23? Overall, there are 1,750+ participants, representing all of U.S. states, many Canadian Provinces, and over 60 countries! 🌐
-
Presenting at #OpenEd23 this year, I am once again reminded how much joy it brings me to talk about my work with others managing, supporting, or even just benefiting from Open Education programs. Being able to discuss tips for building connections, engaging with communities, and building more welcoming spaces for everyone who wants to engage with the premise of "opening education" is so energizing! Thanks especially to those who attended my session with @smithshannonm this afternoon on Building Confidence through Connection!
