As an adult, kayak camping on Posey Island Marine State Park in Washington, the foghorn on nearby Stuart Island sounded every 30 seconds. After several hours of silently cursing it, I obsessed with just knowing I could fall asleep if it only sounded once per minute.

As a teenager, camping with the Boy Scouts at Camp Wilderness, Minnesota, under the stars with no bug dope, as soon as I exposed my head mosquitoes were all over my face and whining in my ears; and as soon as I pulled the sleeping bag up over my head I couldn’t breathe.
