  1. Photography hot take: The social norm of “you don’t walk in front of someone who’s taking a picture” should end.

In the days of film cameras, that norm made sense. Each photo with a film camera cost money, for the film and to develop it, so interrupting someone’s photo was actually harming them.

But in an era where photos are free and can be instantly retaken, it should be totally okay to walk through someone’s picture. All I’m costing you is one press of the shutter button.

  2. Incidentally if you live in #nyc and don’t know about NYCares, check it out. They make it really easy to pick up volunteer shifts. There’s no long-term commitment; the tasks are all things where you can just come for a single shift and be told what to do. newyorkcares.org/home #nyclocal

  3. So at the risk of de-anonymizing myself, this happened in my neighborhood tonight.

  4. TIL, thanks to overhearing a conversation in Williamsburg, that “tartine” is now an adjective. I thought it was a food, but now apparently it’s some kind of fashion style. #nyclocal

  5. As my quest to rebuild my library after the flood continues, I went to a wonderful library book sale this weekend, and came home with (I literally weighed this on the bathroom scale) 40 pounds of used books. A lot of them were on my “need this for the new library” list, and some of them were things I didn’t realize I needed in the new library until I saw them.

It was fun getting that bag through the MTA, believe me.

  6. People in #nyc love to pretend that NYC is the most amazing and special and unique place, and one of the things we like to talk about is the bodega culture, and other people are like, “that’s just convenience stores, we have those everywhere”, but no, bodegas really are different, and I’m going to explain why in a thread. It’ll be unlisted after this first toot so that I don’t overwhelm the timeline, so click this if you want to see it and don’t if you’re already rolling your eyes. #nycLocal

  7. NYClassical’s all non-male production of “Richard III” was excellent. The actress playing Richard in particular was very good, bringing out the funny aspects of the character. If you’re in #nyc, go check it out. It’s free. nyclassical.org for the schedule. #theater #nyclocal

  8. #nyc friends: New York Classical (who I love, and I see their main production every year) is doing a free production this year of Richard III starring all women and gender-fluid people. They’re always good, but especially see this production.

  9. Sometime when I wasn’t paying attention they put a fake new Domino Sugar sign on top of the condos that replaced the Domino Sugar plant they tore down. I’m sure they said they were “paying tribute to the heritage of the site” or whatever, but to quote something that actually is authentically #NYC, “I say it’s spinach and I say to hell with it.”

When my wife is out of town, I make or buy food that she doesn’t like. Tonight is homemade steak tartare. I had to go all the way to Williamsburg to a special butcher shop for the meat, and got the bread at the best local bakery. Came out incredibly delicious.

And yes, those are capers in the tartare. Got the idea from a cooking show.

My favorite local pizza place has been discovered. Today there was a line literally around the block for it. Turns out there was a news story about it a couple of days ago.

My feelings are deeply mixed. On one hand it’s an awesome place and I want it to succeed. On the other hand I’m worried that they have outgrown the space and will move away for a bigger space, and I won’t have amazing pizza so close anymore.

  12. I stood up to those "Showtime" dicks for the first time on the subway last night. They wanted me to move away from my wife to make room for their show, and I wanted to stay with her. They were NOT happy about it, but they ended up doing a modified show that didn't need me to get out of their way. Felt good.

I guess some people must like those guys and give them money, but I can't imagine who.

Homemade “street cart-style” falafel platter, which is to say it’s with yellow rice, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and whitesaucehotsauce.

Housing Works is opening their dispensary 12/29! I'll probably wait a little to avoid crowds but I'm psyched.

  15. I'm sure I've talked about this on here before, but I really like the "Date Night" program that the #MetMuseum has started doing. They stay open late on Friday and Saturday nights, and have live music, gallery talks, and 2 for 1 drink specials and little appetizer plates for sale. I normally don't buy their drinks because they're expensive, so in addition to getting me to visit an additional time they''re also getting me to spend more while I'm there.

I always tell people that my favorite food is “whatever I haven’t tried yet”. Today that was a bacon egg and cheese paella, at a Spanish restaurant in Nolita. Beautiful crispy rice, eggs that still have raw yolks, everything about it was great.

  17. Going to see Rogue One on the biggest IMAX screen in the country tonight!

  18. Hey, you know what’s worse than sitting near where a “Mr Softee” truck is parked and playing its godawful jingle? Sitting near where two of them are parked and are playing the same dammed jingle but they started so different times so they’re horribly discordant.

  19. I’m rewatching “Spin City”, which is about the mayor of #nyc and his staff. It normally does a very good job of accurately capturing NYC culture. But in the most recent episode a character referred to “the zoo” and I have never heard a New Yorker say that phrase. They’d specify the Bronx Zoo or the Central Park Zoo. Call me a nitpicker.

  20. I sang the praises of “Marvel’s Spider-Man” (the game) for its detailed reproduction of #NYC, and what I meant was its reproduction of the geography and architecture of the city. Now I’m playing the sequel, “Miles Morales: Spider-Man”, and it still has that amazing reproduction, but now it gets the culture right too. By which I mean I just did a mission to rescue a bodega cat.

  21. I was planning on live-tooting the #GreatSaunter but it rained all day, so you were spared that. Short version: It was cold, wet and very hard, but I finished it. Now I can barely walk. And I’ll totally do it again, ideally in better weather. I like a challenge like that.

    #nyclocal

  22. The #GreatSaunter is tomorrow! I’m all prepared. I’m confident that I can do it from a muscular, endurance perspective. What I’m worried about is blisters. If I don’t make it that’ll be why.

    #nyclocal

  23. I can’t remember if I’ve posted about this before, but this year I signed up for “The Great Saunter”, a one-day, 32-mile hike around the perimeter of Manhattan. So I’ve been doing preparatory hikes to get into shape. Today was a 20-mile hike starting from my apartment and ending in Long Beach. I made it, but I chewed up my feet. Next time I do a hike this long I have to bring changes of socks. But hey, that’s what these prep hikes are for, to realize things like that.

My absolute favorite local pizza place got a write up in Eater! The oxtail slice is expensive, but as the article says, it is totally worth it. It’s amazing.

  25. Just learned that the Metro Theater on the UWS has a new tenant, and they’re planning on making it a movie theater again! I don’t live there anymore, but I’m thrilled, because I hated to see that beautiful old theater sit empty every time I used to walk by it.

Concord grapes are the best grapes in the world. Pity they’re only available in one part of one country for like two months of the year. But I live in that part of that country and greatly enjoy that part of the year.

An organization in the neighborhood that’s promoting black women’s empowerment had a fish and chicken fry fundraiser tonight. I got a good fried chicken sandwich and an excellent peach cobbler.

  28. Walking around #brooklyn, you quickly notice that a lot of local businesses use “BK” as part of their name. That of course is because “B” alone wouldn’t identify Brooklyn uniquely; it could also be the Bronx. So that got me wondering: Are there single letters that can be uniquely used to identify each borough? Turns out there are, they’re just usually not the first letter. So I present to you the five boroughs:

    M
    Q
    K
    X
    D

  29. I’m in Queens, listening to a band called “The Bronx”, who are from Los Angeles, and I can’t help but think there’s a “Who’s on First”-like bit somewhere in all of that.

  30. Saw @srol do improv comedy tonight, and it was hilarious. #nyclocal people, go and see the next show.

  31. Clueless old person question: My first day in Brooklyn, I walked past a young guy who was talking on the phone. He was saying, “Don’t try to 48 me, bro!”

Anyone know what “48” means as a verb? Urban Dictionary had a bunch of meanings, most of which seemed fictitious and none of which fit into that sentence.
