  1. TIL on March 10th 2026 (just missed it). Small event, focused on unglamourous AI in production, some of the speakers were practitioners I know and respect. The description reminds me a bit of !

    - Talk videos will hopefully be released online soon
    - Blogpost by @pamelafox, one of the speakers: blog.pamelafox.org/2026/03/lea
    - Organisers plan to organize another one next year 👀

  2. @py data science/engineering recently had #NormConf with the same spirit, discussing the everyday, boring, normal work that you need to do for successful data projects etc, maybe you could do a NormConfMobile ?

  3. I really need to watch the playlist of the NormConf22 talks, some interesting things here it seems.

  4. Started looking at lightning talks from #normconf and from the first one (by @afioritto) I learnt about QUALIFY to filter results from a WINDOW function in SQL. Wish I knew this last year. Would have avoided a lot of ugly CTEs.

  5. I attended #NormConf, expecting nothing.

I went away, delighted from a 15-hour conference that blew me away.
Great talks, great MCs, and even a live-band on zoom.

This recap by Vicki is enlightening!

Gotta respect someone that can accept a one-off:

  6. Brilliant #NormConf talk and advice by @chrisalbon - and it was not about what I anticipated!

Got and have a watch because those will be 15 min well spent.

  7. >> Shocked and scandalized, Vectorella discovers that in data science, “the advertised map is not the true territory”

Great post about #normconf, full of things that would've helped me out of imposter syndrome

  8. Just in time for the holidays: #NormConf talk recordings.

From @paniterka I learned that the dumbness of matplotlib's default API is an inheritance from MatLab, which is somehow reassuring.

Also, there is a ggplot style for it, so you can trick your judgemental mathematical friends into thinking that you use R.

  9. So many inspiring presentations and memorable moments during last week’s #NormConf that I’ve been thinking about in the days since. Not the least of which was the YouTube live-caption error during the keynote that brought forth into this world the name Francis Crontab

  10. @vicki Interesting that you don't cite miniconda/mamba

    Would you dare sharing why?

    Asking for a friend.

PS. Unrelated but tx for #normconf .

  11. Enjoyed how this talk about “ Ethics: the unsexy parts” by Rob Keyes nicely lays out day to day data ethics issues that are often ignored as time to devoted to sci-fi scenarios.

Reminds me of reading various “ethical use of AI guidance documents” in my last role and every one had quite a bit of cringe.

  12. My #NormConf talk covered two frameworks -- pre-mortems and tracer bullets -- which can help us to tackle unknowns and move through the ML process faster 💫

    Check it out here! youtube.com/watch?v=vNZY0zhg3D

  13. My talk is up! Learn a bit about coffee tasting and how it can teach us to collect better data! youtu.be/GrQcVU-eapc

  14. If you have a machine learning problem, if no one else can help, and if you have access to the AWS console, maybe you can use...one big machine.

  15. It was such a pleasure to participate in last week! 🤩 My talk on using simulation for better data decisions is now posted, along with all the other great talks we got to experience!

  16. My #normconf talk video is up! Watch this if you want to learn to think about machine learning systems like an engineer in 20 minutes or less.

(And a huge thank you to all of the organizers - especially @vicki - for putting on such an amazing conference!🎉)

  17. #normconf main track videos are up! Thank you @vicki and crew for everything that went in to such a fun conference.

I blabbed for a bit about my favorite topic, recommender systems, here: youtube.com/watch?v=Zoq0oHrGab

  18. This week on Counting Stuff, I want to stress how important the "feeling of being together with people" is for virtual conferences like #normconf and how everyone, even the audience, contributes to it

  19. I started to watch #NormConf, great talks, I recommend it a lot. Although we get a glimpse on how data science should be done and it made me sad to validate my feeling about the way projects are managed at work...
