Today I found myself in the dumb situation of having to scan a QR code in my web browser on my phone. The thing is that I kinda need my phone to scan the QR code. The phone can't damn well scan itself. I then learned that I could open the Google app, go to Google Lens, and it will be able to scan the QR code from a screenshot of the web page.
Does anyone know of an app, preferrably FOSS, that can do this? I'm switching to GrapheneOS soon after my phone hits the 60 day activation milestone, so I can't, nor want, to rely on Google.

Mein Chef hat vor 5 Monaten einen "Online-Marketing-Experten" eingestellt.
Heute hat der den Führungskräften präsentiert, was er in den 5 Monaten gemacht hat.

Es ist grossartig zu sehen, dass immer mehr Menschen Googles Kurs kritisch hinterfragen. Viele wollen selbst entscheiden, ob und wann sie KI nutzen, statt sie ungefragt in immer mehr Dienste aufgezwungen zu bekommen. Die Diskussion darüber, wie viel Einfluss KI haben sollte, ist sehr wichtig und begrüssenswert.
Nicht jede*r mag DuckDuckGo, und Kritik ist teilweise berechtigt. Ähnlich wie bei Signal, LineageOS usw. geht es aber nicht um Perfektion, sondern um alltagstaugliche Alternativen, die echte Wahlfreiheit ermöglichen.

Okay that's it!! I used to have both ChatGPT and Claude tabs open and pinned for a while. Some two weeks ago or so I closed ChatGPT and I have just now closed my Claude tab. I will no longer use Claude (or ChatGPT) for their implication in the US domestic and international state terrorism.
I will still be experimenting and chatting with some LLMs, but will confine myself to local models and those hosted by public or academic providers, like @gwdg 's Chat AI.

Ich habe in meiner Nextcloud die "memories" App installiert. Grundsätzlich eine sehr coole App für Bilder (ähnlich Google-Fotos).
Blöd ist aber, dass die App auch alle /.DAV/ Verzeichnisse von Nextcloud versucht mit aufzunehmen, was zu zahllosen Fehlern führt.
Beispiel: /.DAV/delta_2_4x1_rgb.png: No MIMEType in EXIF data
Es wäre also super, wenn man irgendwie Verzeichnisse einstellen könnte, die die App ignoriert.
Weiß da jemand etwas?

The #email address is one of the most important services you have: It is not only used for communication, but as part of the login credential for nearly all other services it also serves as your digital identity and backup for most of your accounts (e.g. when you need to reset your password, etc.). That makes it your most important hub for all digital services, and becomes a detailed profile of your digital life in itself.
It therefore needs to be #secure - but also respect your #privacy. And it should be #reliable and support your #souvereignity.
The most used email provider #Gmail by #Google might be secure, but most definately neither respects your privacy, nor your #souvereignity as it is one of the #US #BigTech companies that would delete your account if their fascist leader wills it (plus Google's #SundarPichai and #SergeyBrin are openly supporting him).
Time to switch to an #EuropeanAlternative - after some reserach and evaluating the three biggest contenders, I chose to go with @mailbox_org. It'll cost you at least 1€/month, but this money ensures that they won't try to cover their costs by selling your data.
As a bonus, #mailbox_org also provides other services you know from Google, like Calendar, Contacts, Drive, Documents (Text, Tables and Presentations), Chat and Webcam Meetings, Polls and Shared Notes. There's a private and a corporate option, as well as a family option (that I have yet to explore - not quite sure how it works and what benefit it brings). But most importantly, it's #German company following #EU laws, has multiple certifications and simplifies the usage of #GPG for non-techi users, while giving techis the freedom they desire.
Switching one's email is a tedious endeavour - but I believe that this is the most important service to migrating. If there is only one service you want to migrate, let it be the one that gives you access to all other services - or practically cuts you off, if someone else gains access to it!

F-Droid ist wie ein versteckter Garten hinter der Mauer von Google Play: Plötzlich steht man zwischen freigeistigen Apps – ohne Algorithmen, die einem sagen,was man braucht. Task.org gefunden, ausprobiert, und zack: Einfach. Leicht. Meins. Kein Tracking, kein ‚Premium-Upgrade‘. Nur eine App, die tut, was sie soll – und mich fragt,ob ich sie brauche, nicht umgekehrt.
Fühlt sich an,als hätte ich bislangi im Supermarkt eingekauft – und entdecke jetzt den Wochenmarkt um die Ecke.

Moin zusammen 👋🏻☕ Ich sollte mir echt angewöhnen, früher ins Bett zu gehen 😴🙈 Der Tag ist mit 24 Stunden einfach zu kurz. Das Positive ist aber, dass ich einiges an Altlasten entfernt habe. Nach jahrelanger selbstgewählter Abhängigkeit, bedeutet das ein bisschen Arbeit. Hinterher fühlt man sich aber viel besser.

ALTERNATIVE #08: GOOGLE MEET / ZOOM
(ovvero: per fare una call non c'è bisogno di un'app)
Ricevo un link per partecipare a una call importante a cui tenevo. Sapevo che era su Zoom, ma pensavo che avrei potuto partecipare tramite il browser, come sono quasi sicuro che si potesse fare fino a qualche tempo fa.
E invece no. Clicco su "Partecipa alla riunione". Compare il popup: "Non hai aperto Zoom? Tocca per installare l'app Zoom Workplace". Non la voglio la vostra app con l'AI companion e tutte le altre menate, fatemi continuare da browser, siamo nel 2025 mica nel 2012.
E niente, l'opzione non c'è. Non c'è neanche da desktop. Ti devi installare l'app e basta.Amen, niente riunione. Per fortuna la registravano.
Il post sulle alternative libere per le call ce l'avevo "in canna" da un po', ora questa mi pare l'occasione giusta per scriverlo...
N.B.: tutte le istanze riportate offrono chiamate senza limiti di tempo e utilizzabili liberamente senza login.

Da sempre il re dei software open source per le videochiamate.
Sviluppato dalla statunitense 8x8, offre chiamate con un numero massimo di partecipanti limitato solo dalla capacità del server che lo ospita. L'istanza "di bandiera" (meet.jit.si) supporta fino a 75 partecipanti.
Tra le feature figurano tutte le più comuni: chat interna, sfondi personalizzati, condivisione schermo, lavagna interattiva e altro.
Per un ente con un suo server è facilissimo installarlo e avere così un'istanza tutta propria.
Ma anche senza avere un server proprio, ci sono una quantità di server pubblici che lo offrono come servizio libero, senza login, senza app, senza limitazioni (a dir la verità, da cellulare compare una schermata che ti chiede se vuoi proseguire con l'app, ma puoi scegliere di restare nel browser). Se si sceglie di usare l'app client, questa è disponibile sia per Adroid che su iOs.
Tra i server pubblici italiani segnalo quello della Lixper Srl di Torino. Restando in Europa, si può scegliere quello di Systemli in Germania, o quello del collettivo Disroot nei Paesi Bassi.
Per non parlare degli "chatons" francesi: li trovate in questa pagina, nella casella "videoconferenza", e potete cambiare istanza cliccando sull'icona con le due frecce. Le istanze Evolix, Colibris e Deuxfleurs danno anche la possibilità di registrare la chiamata (da desktop).
Anche il servizio di videochiamata della svizzera Infomaniak, utilizzabile senza login, è basato su Jitsi (la registrazione delle chiamate è disponibile solo per chi ha un account Kdrive).
Infine, anche Brave Talk utilizza internamente jitsi, ma per utilizzarlo è necessario installare il browser Brave.2) MIROTALK
Un progetto più recente ma decisamente interessante, ideato dall'italo-croato Miroslav Pejic, che si basa sulla tecnologia peer-to-peer per alleggerire il carico del server (ne ha parlato approfonditamente @[email protected]).
Anch'esso molto ricco di feature (chat, lavagna, screen e file sharing e registrazione integrale della chiamata da desktop - da cellulare si riesce a registrare l'audio di tutti i partecipanti insieme al solo video della propria fotocamera).
La webapp di base è open source e si può installare localmente (questa l'istanza pubblica pilota, utilizzabile da browser), mentre servizi più complessi per aziende sono a pagamento.3) BRIEFING
Un'altra bella alternativa open source e privacy friendly (anche per le chiamate uno a uno), con alcune utili feature come chat, condivisione schermo, disegno a mano libera o testo, diverse opzioni di visualizzazione e anche un gioco di scacchi integrato.
Facilmente installabile anche su server proprio, il software è sviluppato dal tedesco Dirk Holtwick, che mantiene un'istanza pubblica, oltre a un'app client per iOs.4) EduMEET
Software open source che brilla per la leggerezza, adatto ad essere usato anche su pc più datati, e che mantiene comunque un buon set di feature (chat, condivisione schermo, invio file, possibilità di aggiungere un altro flusso video e controllo diretto sulla risoluzione e il framerate per migliorare le prestazioni.
Due istanze pubbliche italiane sono offerte dal CNR (Consiglio Nazionale per le Ricerche) e consiglio di accedervi tramite il sito IoRestoACasa, un servizio nato in tempi di lockdown e fornito dal gruppo omonimo di Fabriano, che mantiene anche una versione modificata del software originale.
Restando invece a quest'ultimo, sviluppato all'interno della collaborazione europea Géant, si può usarlo qui sul server italiano del consorzio GARR, o ancora provare l'istanza pilota.5) BigBlueButton
Probabilmente il software open source più completo e avanzato, con funzioni quali presentazione integrata (da file o direttamente dalle note), lavagna interattiva, sondaggio e cronometro, oltre alla classica chat e alle note condivise formattate. Queste caratteristiche lo rendono un'ottima scelta per una classe virtuale, per conferenze e seminari accademici (è diventato, tra l'altro, lo standard francese per la didattica a distanza).
Nato all'interno dell'Università Carleton di Ottawa (Canada), se ne può trovare qui un'istanza pubblica utiizzabile liberamente (gestita dall'organizzazione Senfcall di Darmstadt, Germania). Switch to using it via email client via IMAP. Including on phone. Make IMAP support a requirement for your next provider. There will be a transition, during which you check both emails conveniently usin the dame client.
Bonus: if you end up not liking new provider, move to next one, open standards ti your service. -

Quante volte abbiamo usato Google per tradurre testi in italiano, o dall'italiano in altre lingue?
Il vero problema è che ormai nell'immaginario collettivo sia quello l'unico servizio gratuito e immediato per avere traduzioni di qualità... invece è molto semplice trovare un'alternativa!Nelle immagini trovate un confronto tra i traduttori esaminati (incluso Google Traduttore per riferimento) basato sullo stesso testo in tedesco.
1) Kagi traduttore
Una delle due componenti gratuite della suite Kagi, che offre un motore di ricerca a pagamento "senza pubblicità e senza sorveglianza", strumenti per la privacy e funzioni IA che promettono di essere rispettose ed efficaci.
(Stanno anche sviluppando un nuovo browser non basato su motori preesistenti, il che sembra un'ottima notizia vista la situazione di monopolio di Chrome e le ultime derive di casa Mozilla...)
Il traduttore è sicuramente uno dei migliori in circolazione e permette anche di tradurre siti web e di inviare un collegamento alla pagina già tradotta. (La traduzione è migliore di quella fornita internamente dai browser, come per es. Brave)
Le lingue sono numerosissime e includono moltissime lingue locali o regionali (dal papiamento al siciliano...)
Non è richiesto altro che di spuntare una casella per verificare di non essere un bot. L'ascolto del testo è riservato agli abbonati.2) DeepL traduttore
Traduzioni di qualità anche superiore a Kagi, numero di lingue molto minore almeno nella versione gratuita (35) e l'assistente alla scrittura AI incluso tra gli strumenti gratuiti senza registrazione (ma non la traduzione di pagine web). La piattaforma è specializzata negli strumenti linguistici e offre piani a pagamento per privati e aziende.3) Lingva translate
Tra i progetti open source, sicuramente quello che dà traduzioni migliori (ufficialmente è un frontend per Google Traduttore, perciò utilizza il motore di Google in modo anonimo, tuttavia la traduzione fornita è molto diversa da quella di Google - probabilmente non può utilizzarne le funzionalità più avanzate).
È possibile ascoltare il testo originale e il testo tradotto con una voce sintetizzata.
Essendo un frontend, non è comunque un traduttore indipendente.

Attualmente è limitato a 6 lingue e purtroppo la qualità della traduzione (almeno in italiano) è piuttosto scadente...
