Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of when I started driving pure EVs, starting with a Nissan Leaf on May 6, 2011 (photo below). Then I had a Tesla from August 25, 2018 to March 13, 2025, and currently a Hyundai Kona Electric (which fits better in my garage, plus it doesn't remind me of Elon). I was initially inspired by the 2006 movie Who Killed the Electric Car.
All with no gas or oil changes! (Also no smog checks when I lived in California.) I will definitely never buy another car with an internal combustion engine (another type of #ICE to avoid).

One first gen, base spec CD and Bluetooth only #nissanleaf brought kicking and screaming up to date with a €65 Android Auto display.
Works very well if you pair everything through Bluetooth, it'll retain steering controls as well.
If only LeafSpy had AA support, but you can get around that by screen sharing.

If it wasn't for the fact I'd drunk too much to safely handle an angle grinder and Mrs Flan would have probably battered me with a selection of heavy tools, this could have very likely had been parked on my drive this morning.
Oh well, back to struggling to load up the car with building materials again.

After 2 months that included a rejected arbitration claim, a successful appeal, and various legal threats, #Nissan will repurchase our 2020 #Leaf. Since January, 2026, we have not been able to drive our #EV because of a bad battery. Thankfully it's under warranty, but Nissan has no batteries to give. So I invoked our state's Lemon Law. Now that they have agreed to repurchase, another 6 to 12 weeks to get paid. Meanwhile, not really digging the gas Altima loaner. I'll be glad when this is over.

they also had an almost identical looking white Nissan Leaf! just the ZE1 instead of the ZE0, but definitely weird to see a clone of my car on their porch haha
They also pointed out my car has a little solar panel, and I never realized that's what it actually was; it's tiny so we presume it's just to keep the 12v system topped up to keep the electronics and such alive. Still neat though

This is going to take primary legislation to fix. Either support the car for a reasonable lifetime, say 12-15 years, or enable all features and open the ecosystem when you drop support so someone else can DIY it. Cars-as-a-service is a massively retrograde step. #nissan #nissanleaf #ev #cars

Put on our big pants (and 1000v gloves) and took the old battery packs out today. Once we started not hard at all and not very scary (350v DC will kill). Now prepping the case lip for resealing. Next session will be putting the new battery packs in. Super fun 🤩 #Vivnes #NissanLeaf #Recycle #DIY

Good progress today, the pallet jack worked well and the #ev #nissanleaf battery is out. We cut the seal and took the lid off and then watched a bunch of videos on how to safely take out the cell packs (going to do that tomorrow)

Once again, the #nissanleaf has come through for me as a material hauler on my ranch. Just like the F150 Lightning, the leaf has 2 doors too many, and sacrificed cargo space for human occupancy. Unlike the Ford, the Leaf is easier to load/unload t-posts. :)
That car really needs a lift kit and some knobbies. -
Alright, it’s been a big job getting the battery (in the boxed on the photo) here from #China, the shed cleared up (most organised it’s been in a decade), the #NissanLeaf happy enough to drive in here and a cunning plan to use the pallet jack with attached platform to lower/raise the battery pack. Gus (very clever) is coming over Wednesday to sense check and we’re going to have a go. #ev #UpCycle

okay there's definitely some water in here but the whole board is epoxied so unsure where it would've shorted .. it smells like ozone and magic smoke and unhappy plastic in here though, so maybe something just died?

@jwildeboer The early Nissan Leaf certainly didn't do this well, but the article is talking about newer EVs. I sold my 2011 Leaf in 2019, but had replaced the battery in 2017. #nissanleaf
When my two subsequent EVs (Tesla Model 3 then Hyundai Kona Electric) get down to the maximum fully charged range of the Leaf (70 miles), I feel like they're almost empty. I charge to 80%, but I'm retired and now live on a small island, so range isn't a big deal like it sometimes was in California.

A month and a half after my car accident, I finally have my car back. I don’t have to worry about the rental or paying for gas anymore. I had to quickly relearn how to drive an electric car with single pedal driving on the way back home but it all came back pretty quickly :neofox_laugh:

@Niall Thanks - this is great. We are going to have solar installed by a professional. And we will go with an inverter that is sold, certified and supported in NZ.
I am buying a cell kit that replaces the existing cells in our #NissanLeaf and a rack kit that I can put the old cells into to create a house battery.
Ideally the house inverter/controller would treat this recycled battery the same that it would a car that had #V2L, putting a standard interface between them.

‘This week, Australia’s renewable energy agency released a V2G roadmap, which notes widespread uptake could “materially reduce electricity costs for consumers and accelerate national emissions reduction”….‘…a V2G user was alerted by their energy retailer that power prices had spiked to over $20 per kilowatt hour – far above normal rates of 25–45 cents. They immediately set their car and home battery to sell power back to the grid. In two hours, they sold 28 kilowatt hours of power to the grid and made more than $560. As they told us: “I look forward to more such events.”
‘…to date, there’s no consensus showing V2G shortens the battery life of EVs significantly. One recent study shows it increases degradation by 0.3% a year. But another showed V2G might actually extend battery life in some scenarios…
‘We found battery warranty was a bigger concern than battery life. This is because most EV manufacturers other than Nissan don’t mention V2G in their battery warranties, leading drivers to believe they might void their warranty by using V2G.’

Been weighing a concept for how to ethically transition to #renewables .
In a logical world, we would just all use less. #Bike or ebike instead of drive if you can that sort of thing.
We live in a world of #capitalism where supply and demand drive building of infrastructure and we NEED to #electrify everything with new renewables. So, is at this point, reducing electrical consumption, IF you have a green option for electricity, from the grid, actually going to be helpful to the planet? Would gobbling up as much green electricity to make the demand look higher cause more renewables to come online faster?I try and ride my #ebike. I calculated one trip is around $0.08 of electricity. My new #Nissanleaf costs around $1.20 for the same trip, $2.00 if from a commercial charger. IF my electrical source was green, should I be pushing myself to use my bike as much as possible or at this point use my car as much as possible until we reach a certain point and supply is enough that everything is now electrified that can be?
None of my electrical supplies are 100% green so the point is moot and I should bike as much as possible, but the question is still interesting.
