There’s so many systems and keybinds that make Nethack a famously inaccessible nightmare to comprehend, but this feels like a great way to introduce people to ASCII games in a friendlier manner

2026-04-14 14:27 Mum took me for my first walk outside in the sun and the flowers yesterday, since a family flu outbreak last week. I was so #sick and the last to recover, and not able to do much more than vegetate and poke at #NetHack a bit, hence delays to taping. However, #CRRRRS #SFFH #Podcast shall return soon with a revisit of #DoctorWho: #GhostLight, as soon as I can talk without coughing my guts out.

I recently picked up a new classic #roguelike, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup or #dcss. I am really impressed by its #qualityoflife features compared to #Angband and #Nethack, including a web client, mouse support, auto-move, and auto-fight. It really shows how a game can have a great easy-to-learn interface but still be balls hard. I like it.

I saw a post here on #Mastodon recently (sorry, can't find it right now) with an intriguing old-school screenshot of a #RogueLike #NetHack or #Hack like game.. And this is that game

It's got a great tutorial that walks you through the basics at a good rate, and it's interesting and a bit challenging. I felt like I was playing the game not just learning the mechanics. It's on all the platforms.

Are there any terminal-based MMOs? Modern ones, still maintained? Like, a game that I can play with a large number of strangers, over the internet, in the #terminal?

I know about #CDDA, and #DwarfFortress (which isn't really text mode anyway), but those are single-player games, just like #NetHack is too (even though it has "net" in its name).

I don't really want it to be _text_ based (i.e. everything just in prose), ASCII-art graphics would be nice.

I just set up a custom GPT "ESOL Dungeon Master" to play #Zork / #NetHack / #ChooseYourOwnAdventure games with #EnglishLearner students. Focused on English language #education.

Need to convince the higher ups to allow me to play it with students during class. I'm not sure if it will be "go for it" or "we need to get permission from higher higher-ups and / or parents."
