  1. Just got in @Furball 's old Famicom - Sent it off to get a NES RGB 4.0 done along with a recap. Here's a not super high bitrate (but good enough) video of how it turned out. Recorded using OBS via a RAD2X cable connected to the Famicom Top Loader on a GPD Pocket 3's HDMI input.

All original hardware, no emulation, just an Everdrive N8 Pro

  2. Famicom is back. It has a NES RGB with Bakutendo Power Board with SNES Multiout that does composite, RGB, and Svideo. Has a standard NES power supply connector using a Triad PSU.

Also has a Famicoun NES and SNES controller adapter with 8bitdo Bluetooth adapters.

The Famicom controllers (both P1) are modified with 8bitdo Bluetooth wireless boards.

The NESRGB is wired into the explanation controller port so palette switching works on the controllers connected to the famicoun.

    All recapped.

Finally, an Everdrive N8 using a SNES RAD2X to connect it to the Sony OLED. It will eventually go on the Retrotink 4k in the game room.

I also have NES and NES Dogbone controllers with Bluetooth mods.

This has been a “dream” build of mine.

  3. Quick review of the outputs of the NESRGB, I think the results speak for themselves quality-wise. The finale of the NESRGB + NESessity install: youtube.com/watch?v=RDmkW4xGoo0

  4. Finished the installation guide for the NESessity boards + NESRGB. There were a couple of issues that were sorted during the build, but everything came out pretty great.

  5. Got the NESRGB installed for the most part and the picture quality is outstanding. Composite looks very good, S-Video is outstanding, and RGB is perfect. I _think_ I fucked up the controller part of the NESRGB because I can't change palettes and the IGR doesn't work...I'll handle that later.

  6. Documentation: not the most fun thing in the world to do, but it does make things much, much easier for the next (or current) person. Since the NESessity + NESRGB combo doesn't use the standard `R`, `G`, or `B` pads off the NESRGB, figured it would be better if I showed where exactly you need to pull the signals off the NESRGB.

  7. NESRGB + PPU installed into the mainboard. Still need to run wires to all the video pins, but this was the actual difficult part.

  8. Starting to document the journey with the NESessity board + NESRGB installation. The docs are there, but they're kinda hard to put together. I'm hoping to get the information in one place and offer more clarity on how everything fits together.

  9. Painful lesson of the day: the desoldering gun does not care about your feelings or your hands when clearing a clog and not being careful. However, got the CPU, PPU, WRAM, and VRAM unsoldered (including sockets) from the NES mainboard. I'll solder the VRAM and WRAM back in later. Desoldering guns make things so much easier even if I'm an idiot on occasion.

  10. So, after diving through a ton of information, I've made some discoveries:

    1. The NESessity board doesn't use the same Mini-DIN socket that the NESRGB does.
    2. The pinouts are definitely different.
    3. You don't pull `R`, `G`, or `B` off of the regular spot on the NESRGB.
    4. The NESessity uses the Sega Mega-Drive/Genesis 2 RGB cable.

In short: don't order an NESRGB compatible RGB cable if you're using a NESessity board, use a Genesis 2 RGB cable.

  11. Okay, figured out how I'm routing the palette select connections along with +5V power: the Player 1 connector. Pins 1 and 5 get me GND and +5V, and the Clock/Data/Latch signals come out of pins 2/3/4 respectively. This saves me running another set of cables directly from the power board.

  12. Okay, final purchase for the NES: an 8-pin mini-DIN to SCART cable for the NES. Kind of a pain in the ass to track down, but RetroGamingConsoles had my back like always. Not a cheap cable, but it'll get the job done perfectly with respect to output from the NESRGB into the RetroTINK.

  14. Little distraction from my usual Atari projects. Wiring hell for NES, so we can have nice RGB video output. Starring NESRGB board. My most tedious modification install ever. But hey, it's nice.. Enjoy! 👨‍🏭 nokturnal.pl/2023/07/rgb-for-n #NES #Nintendo #NESRGB

  15. Upgrading my NES for RGB out tonight.
Only ripped off one pad desoldering the PPU, but luckily it was redundant!
