I was thinking about something that John Green shared with us on the recent #Vlogbrothers video where he announced he was taking a break for a while.
Resident #nerdfighteria mathematician and current mayor of Evanston, Illinois, Daniel Biss, shared this with John when talking about his decision to leave Twitter, and I think it's worth sharing here verbatim.
"I thought I was bringing a bucket of clean water to the toxic lake that is Twitter. And I knew, of course, that the place had structural problems, and incentivized bad faith discourse as part of its architecture, but I figured every day I'll bring my little bucket of clean water to try and clean up that lake.
But then eventually, I realized I wasn't cleaning the lake at all, I was dumping a bucket of water into a toxic lake which does nothing but raise the level of the toxic lake, while also ruining a bit of clean water."
The discourse around last night's debate and the presidential election in general is so fucking toxic that few of us can reasonably talk about it. There's too much refusal to accept things that must be true (say, international politics is complicated and people are always going to die somewhere because we made a choice)
We're talking about a job that _cannot be done "correctly", ever_, and right now those of us on the left seem, for the most part, to be completely immune to pragmatism.
Anyway, I'm going to try talking about this less. It's not helping anybody, but it is ruining a perfectly good bucket of water.
John did share a lot of useful insight in four minutes, though. e.g.
"Depression, which produces so little, is astonishingly effective at out-thinking me."
But the last thing he shared was:
"Despair is a lie.
Hopelessness is a lie.
No simple story can ever be true, and there is no simpler story than 'nothing means anything.'
You not being loved or worthy of love is a lie.
Your passion and enthusiasm and spark of consciousness _not mattering_? Is a lie."DFTBA and hang in there friends. Shit's gonna get real.

I remember one of the brothers talking about how AI will not diminish our capacity to be astonished by people's abilities. They used the example of a calculator.
