For a person who calls himself a science educator, and has self-awareness of the scope of his online influence, it's sad to see Hank Green admitting that he's been using an LLM to "help" write the scripts for his videos.
Hank Green's hand-wringing and "Yeah, but"-type justifications look familiar. It's the same talk I've heard from several other highly intelligent people, some of them friends I've known for years. They think their intelligence, reasoning skills, and experience with computers/science makes them immune to some all-too-human cognitive biases and emotional manipulation. This confidence makes them an ideal target, and puts them on the path to cognitive surrender to LLMs.

Boy do I have mixed feelings about the #HankGreen controversy. It doesn't seem like he is actually using #AI to help write his scripts, like people are accusing.
However, him admitting he does use #LLMs to do look up papers is perhaps a much bigger betrayal, since the niche he has carved for himself is showing people how you can ask questions and then do research to find out the answers.
On the other hand, web search is being actively sabotaged, so good luck finding info without asking a bot.

He talks about the Jevon's Paradox, how electricity is fungible, what the constraints of electricity is, how #AI is making #code/programming be another substrate, and how we can't really predict how much code we'll be needing because there's no way to predict how we'll be using code in the future.

@futurebird Hank Green is extremely deferential to authority in general. His old videos on anti-vaxxers show this. He has a tendency to consider people who don't defer to authority as irrational. In the case of anti-vaxxers, his blind deference led him to correct positions. In the case of AI, it led him to incorrect positions. We must stop "trusting the experts" & start critically evaluating studies & their methodology. I trust reliable evidence like well-conducted studies on all-cause mortality. These happen to be mostly made by "the experts", but "the experts" also say nonsense if given enough money. I trust someone with no credentials writing in a peer reviewed journal more than a PhD with 30 years of experience speaking on a podcast. Can't believe someone asked @hankgreen "Whats a flicker?" in reference to Flickr, the photo sharing website, and then he went on to explain this history of Flickr. 😅
If you thought having to explain a fax machine or a dial up modem made you feel old, imagine having to explain what a website was from 2004 (yet is still running today).
That said, hopefully its not too long before we have to answer "Whats a facebook?"
