Perhaps if more of us spent more time looking up and around at the wonder of the natural world, and paying attention to our place in it, perhaps we would live somewhat less stressful, divisive, and unhealthy lives.

For a person who calls himself a science educator, and has self-awareness of the scope of his online influence, it's sad to see Hank Green admitting that he's been using an LLM to "help" write the scripts for his videos.

Hank Green's hand-wringing and "Yeah, but"-type justifications look familiar. It's the same talk I've heard from several other highly intelligent people, some of them friends I've known for years. They think their intelligence, reasoning skills, and experience with computers/science makes them immune to some all-too-human cognitive biases and emotional manipulation. This confidence makes them an ideal target, and puts them on the path to cognitive surrender to LLMs.

Boy do I have mixed feelings about the #HankGreen controversy. It doesn't seem like he is actually using #AI to help write his scripts, like people are accusing.

However, him admitting he does use #LLMs to do look up papers is perhaps a much bigger betrayal, since the niche he has carved for himself is showing people how you can ask questions and then do research to find out the answers.

On the other hand, web search is being actively sabotaged, so good luck finding info without asking a bot.

I have no idea who this guy is, this video is barely about Hank Green, I still have no idea what "the situation" is but he says a lot of smart things about LLMs, creativity and psychology.

@futurebird Hank Green is extremely deferential to authority in general. His old videos on anti-vaxxers show this. He has a tendency to consider people who don't defer to authority as irrational. In the case of anti-vaxxers, his blind deference led him to correct positions. In the case of AI, it led him to incorrect positions. We must stop "trusting the experts" & start critically evaluating studies & their methodology. I trust reliable evidence like well-conducted studies on all-cause mortality. These happen to be mostly made by "the experts", but "the experts" also say nonsense if given enough money. I trust someone with no credentials writing in a peer reviewed journal more than a PhD with 30 years of experience speaking on a podcast.
