I braved a traditional Austrian sauna with several strict rules - the main one being that you’re only allowed in if you’re stark naked.
Picture the scene. I’d been invited by Wizz Air on a press trip to the Schladming-Dachstein region of Austria and due to an early flight and several bad decisions on my part, I hadn’t had any proper kip for around 30 hours.
After a very beautiful but very rainy hike through the Silberkarklamm canyon, you can imagine it was music to my ears that the traditional mountain hotel we were staying at - the four-star Hotel Berghof in Ramsau am Dachstein - had five saunas downstairs.
However, sensing a culture clash on the horizon, our Austria tourist board contact - the fabulous Magdalena Penz - had a quick word with the reception desk and confirmed some chilling news: you were only allowed in the saunas if you took your kit off. All of it. And apparently some people can get very offended if you try and go in wearing swimming trunks or bikinis.
While the rest of our party reacted to this with mild horror, my recent soaking on the walk and ongoing sleep deprivation meant I really, really would appreciate sweating it out in some dry heat for 15 minutes, and I was prepared to go native to do it.

Depending upon where you are in Europe, the practice of sunbathing topless is more or less acceptable. Brits, for example, have a record of struggling to ditch the bikini top by comparison to their more brazen European neighbours.
Yet even on what the English describe as “The Continent”, exposing one’s breasts is fraught with peril. As a French sociologist researching naturism, I am fascinated by the thin line that turns bare breasts into a political statement, such as with FEMEN activists, or simple bathing practice to avoid pesky tan lines.
Bare breasts tolerated at the beach
The beach is one of the few places where it’s not inappropriate to lie partially unclothed next to strangers. That space-time is set out by the sand, turned strict, impenetrable boundary beyond which certain practices, such as exposing the body in a swimming costume, or even more so when it comes to bare breasts, are unacceptable.
On the beach, it is therefore possible to be naked without offending public decency. So how can women go topless on the beach without being eroticized by all the men around them? Because “the exposure of nudity”, according to the sociologist Jean-Claude Kaufmann, “makes the nude less apparent”. When reunited, specific conditions can normalise, if not make breasts invisible. One of the most common arguments women will resort to to justify topless sunbathing is that “We’re all made the same”. Kaufmann concludes that “normalisation stems from breasts’ impersonality in general. The archaic visual attraction would then only be due to the scarcity of the good which, now abundant, is no longer attractive”...

**Mass skinny dip in Loch Ness will end new Inverness outdoor festival**

A new festival aimed at showcasing the great outdoors around Inverness and Loch Ness will close with a mass skinny dip in Loch Ness.
The Loch and Land Festival takes place this autumn and aims to celebrate the natural beauty of the area and the many outdoor activities available.
“The Inverness and Loch Ness area is a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike, and Loch and Land Festival will showcase the best of what the area has to offer,” explained Don Johnstone, CEO of Visit Inverness Loch Ness (VILN), which is organising the festival.
The week-long celebration of the outdoors will include everything from climbing, yoga, archery, sea kayaking, whitewater sledging, fly fishing and axe throwing to tours, cruises, litter picks, speaker events, wood carving and wild swimming.
It will take place from October 25 to November 3, with a mass Sunrise Skinny Dip at Loch Ness to raise funds for Trees for Life bringing the activities to a chilly end!
The activities and events are being hosted by local businesses including In Your Element, Dolphin Spirit, The Ledge, Loch Ness Hub, Invercannich Farm, Dundreggan Rewilding Centre, Bowhunter Archery Woodland Activities, 42 Cycling, Alpkit and Ticket to Ride.

Yet, there I was, taking part in the National British Naturism Naked Walk and Skinny Dip event on Sunday to raise important funds for the British Heart Foundation.

**Brewers’ oops over bare beer project**

A California brewery has apologised for ripping off the signage of a Nelson nudist club on its cans without asking first.
Members of the Nelson Naturist Park, formerly known as the Nelson Sun Club, came across the brew while surfing the net, and emailed screenshots to the Nelson Mail.
The West Coast IPA beer, named after the Nelson Sun Club, bears an image of the club’s signage, an art work of two men playing tennis in their birthday suits and sneakers, and three bearded men, whose bare bodies were pixellated.
“Shame they didn’t request usage of our signage and artwork,” the club posted on Facebook.
After the brewery was contacted by the Nelson Mail, it emailed an apology to the naturists.
“I would like to start off by saying that we are very sorry for not contacting you about using the Nelson Sun Club name for a beer,” wrote Alvarado Street Brewery director of marketing Brock Bill.
Brewers from Alvarado Street were in Nelson in March to select hops from Freestyle Hops, a farm based in the Sunrise Valley, also home to the Nelson Sun Club.
“[We] fell in love with the idea of your establishment and were very much inspired by the name, the artwork, and idea of the Nelson Sun Club itself.
“The name felt almost perfect for a beer as it gives a fun-loving naturist attitude and sense of place, but by no means should that be an excuse.”...

**Skinny dipping event raises hundreds for charity***
A secret charity skinny-dip in Jersey has raised hundreds of pounds for charity, organisers say, despite authorities withdrawing permission for the event.
Event organiser Ross Mantle said he and some friends held the event in a "secret location" after raising funds in aid of Jersey Hospice Care.
He said approval was given and sponsorship money was pledged before permission was withdrawn.
St John Constable Andy Jehan said he was unable to support the event at the time as he did not want to breach any law.
'No police powers to prohibit'
Mr Mantle said nearly £800 was raised for the charity and a protest skinny-dip was held.
The organiser said he decided to go ahead with the swim in secret as he did not want to "disappoint" anybody who donated.
The naturist swim was planned for 13 July at Bonne Nuit, having had permission from the police, the Bailiff and St John Constable Andy Jehan.
In an email to Mr Mantle, Jersey Police cited article 2 of the Policing of Beaches (Jersey) Regulations 1949 which said "no person shall on any beach behave or be clothed in any manner reasonably likely to offend public decency".
The force also cited article 35 of the Sexual Offences (Jersey) Law 2018.
Police did tell Mr Mantle it was not for the States Police to permit or prohibit the event.
But Mr Jehan previously said he had to cancel the event having discovered it could breach legislation.
He added that he hoped the event would go ahead in Jersey in the future.
"I tried to find a solution with the organiser at Bonne Nuit.
"Unfortunately, what we didn't want to do was breach any law and, therefore, that's why I couldn't support it at the time," he said...

Gaby Hoffmann thinks Hollywood might have its priorities askew when it comes to the debate surrounding onscreen nudity.
“I’ve always been very comfortable being naked,” the Eric actress told The Independent during a recent interview. "So long as a woman is not being made to feel uncomfortable or isn’t being exploited, it shouldn’t be a big deal.”
That being said, the actress who got her start as a “punchy” child star before graduating to more mature roles knows by now to expect a reaction if a project involves being naked on camera. She told the outlet that following her role Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus — the druggie road trip movie where she starred alongside Michael Cera — some viewers were scandalized by her nude scenes. That reaction was later echoed after her appearance in season 3 of Girls, as Adam Driver’s oft-naked sister, Caroline.
“I was annoyed and bored by that conversation, especially being called brave,” Hoffmann said, adding, “I’m always shocked that nudity is such a big topic when it seems like in every other film someone gets their head blown off.”

Newly obtained text messages that Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell sent from his personal cell phone to millionaire philanthropist Stuart Sloan reveal that both men share a mutual “disgust” for the “nudity” at Denny Blaine Park, a long-time queer nude beach. In the texts, Sloan described the beach as attracting a “sub-group” of people from “all over” with “very different morals than most of the people in Seattle, you and me included.” Meanwhile, Harrell wrote, “I have been made aware of the fact that the problem of nudity and hazardous waste has become totally totally unacceptable at the beach.” Harrell continued, “If you are disgusted I share your disgust.”
The texts also show a deeper level of collaboration between the two men in their effort to “clean up” the park, casting even more doubt on Harrell’s assertion that he did not know Sloan anonymously pledged $1 million to fund the construction of a children’s play area at the beach, a proposal that deeply angered Seattle’s LGBTQ community, who saw the plan as a de facto eviction.
Lee Keller of the Keller Group represents Denny Blaine Park for All, a group of local neighbors that includes Sloan. I grew up in Syria, a mostly Islamic country where public nudity is not only frowned upon, but forbidden. Even now, having lived in the U.S. for 40 years, wandering around naked is not my thing. You won’t catch me streaking at a soccer match. And at the gym, I’m one of the modest guys, wrapping a towel around myself in the locker room.
But then, a few weeks ago, I received an invitation to attend Skinny Dip Day — an apparent global holiday — Saturday at Sandy Hook’s Gunnison Beach, New Jersey’s only nude beach.
My gut reaction was “I don’t think so.”
Then I remembered I was in New Jersey, the place where I have experienced many firsts, like surviving a polar plunge into the Atlantic Ocean in freezing January, or being crowd-surfed upon at a heavy metal concert or judging a Sinatra sing-off (not to mention trying scrapple, yikes).
I have reveled in my time here in the Garden State experiencing its lively, and at times shocking, people, places and experiences.
So why not attend Skinny Dip Day?...

Dozens of nudists in Catalonia have been part of long human chains to defend naturism in around 20 Catalan beaches on Sunday midday.
Recently, many activists have complained that the number of clothed swimmers on nudist beaches has increased, so they are calling for respect for the activity and clothed visitors not to judge them.
In Tarragona's Savinosa beach, south of Barcelona, around 60 people held hands on the shore. This is one of the most prominent examples of naturist beaches that has now seen dozens of clothed swimmers.
"Nudism is not forbidden, but socially is not very well accepted," Segimon Rovira, president of the Catalan Naturism Club Association, told the Catalan News Agency (ACN).
"Generally, across the world, society is becoming more and more conservative, and we see that many and many more people are having more problems in doing nudism on the beaches," he added.
The performance took place at midday on 24 different beaches for the third non-consecutive time that this event occurred after one in 2019 and then in 2023. In one of the most attended nudist beaches in Spain, Torn beach in Hospitalet de l'Infant, they postponed the performance to August 4, as it was cloudy in the morning.
The activity also wanted to highlight that the number of nudist activists has "halted" during the last years, and those who follow it are older than average, as "youngsters, with social media and photos, tend to be more reluctant to do nudism," Rovira said.
They are not calling for more space but for "respect."...

Florida has changed its highway welcome signs that greet drivers crossing the state line.
Those drivers are now met by signs that say “Welcome to the Free State of Florida” with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ name under it.
“No better way to celebrate Independence Day Weekend than new state line signs welcoming Floridians and visitors to the Free State of Florida!” posted state Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue.
But what does Perdue know about “freedom?” He was a henchman in the DeSantis campaign stunt to kidnap migrants who were making legal asylum claims.
Better off looking for a more credible champion of freedom in Florida.
And that led me to Mike Sullivan, an undisputed freedom seeker.
Sullivan is the founder of pickleball at the Cypress Cove Nudist Resort in Kissimmee, the state’s largest nude pickleball club.
You can’t get much freer than nude pickleball, and when it comes to nude pickleball, Florida’s the spot.
Just like with iguanas, nude pickleball players do well in tropical outdoor habits with moist 85 degree days.
It’s too bad Florida’s welcoming highway signs weren’t more specific.
For example, instead of making room to plug the governor’s name on the freedom-claiming roadway signs, those signs could have enticed drivers with the cryptic invitation, “Come dink in the duff with us” or, “See how round Robin is at one of our round robins.”

Here’s what to know:
CAN YOU LET IT ALL HANG OUT AT HOME?
It’s illegal in Florida to expose your “sexual organs” or be naked in public or on someone else’s private property “in a vulgar or indecent manner.” It is also illegal to be naked “so near thereto as to be seen from such private premises.” To demonstrate that someone committed “unlawful exposure of sexual organs” while tanning naked on their property, prosecutors would need to prove all five of the following, according to jury instructions from The Florida State Bar Association:
▪ The person was naked.
▪ It could be seen from someone else’s private property.
▪ The nudity was “vulgar, indecent, lewd, or lascivious.”
▪ The person “intended” their nudity to be “vulgar, indecent, lewd, or lascivious.”
▪ The nudity “caused offense” to at least one person.
The jury instructions also say that “proof of mere nudity” isn’t enough to find someone guilty. It also offers some synonyms for “vulgar,” among them wicked, lustful or sensual.

Technological advancements in genetic analysis suggest that Lucy may have been naked, or at least much more thinly veiled.
According to the coevolutionary tale of humans and their lice, our immediate ancestors lost most of their body fur 3 to 4 million years ago and did not don clothing until 83,000 to 170,000 years ago.

On the very day of “Hair’s” Broadway opening on April 29, 1968, police were called to Columbia University’s campus to violently quell student antiwar riots. Seven hundred students were arrested.
“Hair” was already a cultural riot of its own, with news swirling that the young cast would get naked at the end of Act I. “Several healthy young men facing front and center in the altogether,” as the New York Times described it the day before opening. The scene ended with actors playing police threatening to arrest the entire audience for viewing the obscenity.
Well, Columbia exploded again last month, just as a new “Hair” opened at Signature Theatre in Arlington. Resonance abounds. Things are different now. But they’re also the same.
“Come see the penises!” is how William Goldman satirically summarized “Hair’s” original advertising campaign in “The Season,” his book about that year in theater. “There were also some bare boobs around, but this is the twentieth century, and bare boobs are nothing nowadays. But a penis! Suddenly you knew what art was all about.”
That original nude scene was quick, dimly lit, with no motion allowed due to local decency laws. Everyone got undressed under a giant piece of cloth and emerged through a slit. Productions since have varied from no nudity at all to Broadway’s 2009 revival going full-cast, full-on...

Work to design and install nude beach warning signage at Tasmania’s first official “clothing optional” beach has begun.
In December 2023, the West Tamar Council voted to turn the remote Pebble Beach, also known as First Little Beach, at Boobyalla Bay in the Narawntapu National Park into a nudist area.

The film is about exposing yourself, being insecure, about friendship and growing up.
This film plan has been selected for Cinesud Shortslab and is partly financed by Cinesud, but we still need extra money to complete the budget.

At 7.30am on the cold and wet morning of April 2, 1980, Arthur Albrow, 61, took off his long johns and trudged naked across the shingly beach, letting out a gasp as he entered the icy sea.
The moment was underwhelming but a victorious end to the long fight for the right to be naked in public. Today, seven million people visit the UK’s dozens of public nudist sites.
But when councillors voted to allow the first nudist beach, 45 years ago, the decision was met with controversy The council vote was passed in August 1979, thanks to Tory councillor Eileen Jakes, 47, who handed around photographs of herself bathing topless in Ibiza. “I came into the world with nothing on and I will go out with nothing on. Why should I be ashamed of nudity?”, the grandmother said.
She responded to a call by the Central Council for British Naturism, which petitioned 140 local authorities for a nudist beach. As landlady of a beachfront pub, she argued having a beach in Britain for nude bathers...

Brave cyclists donned helmets and not much more for a bike ride in the buff at Waihī Beach.
It was all in the name of body positivity, cycle safety and the environment as part of the World Naked Bike Ride - Waihī Beach.
The raw cyclists were waved at and cheered on as they breezed their way from Waihī Beach Hotel, along Wilson Rd towards Bowentown and back again.
Saturday’s bare bike ride was the third local World Naked Bike Ride - Waihī Beach which aligns with an international movement.
Hauraki Naturally founder Andrew Cook said families clapped and cheered the cyclists enthusiastically as they rode through the village.
Just about all the cyclists “dared to be bare’'. The naturist supporters had painted their bodies with positive messages for the 9km bike ride.
The World Naked Bike Ride started globally in 2003 as a protest against oil dependency and a celebration of the human body. A cycle advocacy and safety theme has since been introduced.

Friends say he got the nickname "the Professor" because of a stint as a drafting instructor at Delgado Community College in New Orleans. Had I ever seen so much bare flesh in one room? Naked in a mixed-gender Austrian sauna, I sat opposite two dozen other nude people on wooden benches. Even after more than a year of living in Europe, as an American, I still felt a little uncomfortable sitting there in nothing but my own skin.
The sauna master came in to warm things up. Tall and lanky, wearing just a towel wrapped around his hips, he wheeled in a cart with several grapefruit-size balls of crushed ice infused with essential oils like black pepper, lime and eucalyptus. After a short speech telling us to leave immediately if we felt dizzy, he placed one of the ice balls onto a tray of hot coals, and it began to sizzle. The smell reminded me of an expensive aromatic candle: a touch sweet, a touch spicy.
He twisted forward, backward and sideways with a large towel clutched between his hands, like a half-dressed matador, moving the air around the room with a singular goal: to get us very, very hot, as part of a sauna ritual called aufguss, German for “infusion.” As I watched, mesmerized, I began to forget my awkwardness — or that I was even naked.

Freikörperkultur und Lebensreform Backstory
Freikörperkultur, which translates to ‘free body culture’ (FKK), is derived from the German Naturists Movement that started in the 1890s and is still practiced in northern Europe today. Beachs and parks designated for naturism are sign posted as FKK places.
German FKK naturism was part of the Lebensreform movement and the Wandervogel youth movement of 1896, from Stieglitz, Berlin, which promoted ideas of fitness and vigour.
At the same time, doctors of the Natural Healing Movement were using heliotherapy, treating diseases such as tuberculosis, rheumatism, and scrofula with exposure to sunlight.
Nacktkultur, a term coined in 1903 by Heinrich Pudor, connected nudity, vegetarianism and social reform, and was practised in a network of 200 members clubs. The movement gained prominence in the 1920s by offering a health giving life-style with Utopian ideals. Germany published the first naturist journal between 1902 and 1932, but it became politicised by radical socialists who believed it would lead to classlessness and a break down of society. Like everyone on earth, Joe Clingman said he was born a nudist, adding it’s not until people are taught to stay covered – in most situations – that they do.
It wasn’t until his late 30s that Clingman explored naturism – non-sexual public nudity in a social environment.
“My only regret is not trying it sooner,” he said.
Clingman now brings the naturism experience to the Big Island through Hawaiian Naturist Park, a nude bed and breakfast located in Fern Forest, just outside Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. He said his resort has welcomed the naturalist community to Hawai‘i Island since 2021, including families, couples and singles from all walks of life, ethnicities and sexual orientation.
“For nudists, our norm might seem extreme to some, but once you experience it, you will find we are actually pretty modest folks,” said Clingman who owns the resort with his wife. “This is because we detach nudity from sexuality.”

When I moved to Berlin nine years ago, one of the most striking culture shocks I faced was the locals’ relative ease with public nudity. In saunas, that is.
For Germans – or Berliners, at least – stripping off to use the sauna is completely normal. Likewise, in the changing rooms and showers of sports facilities, there’s no huddling under towels to get dressed. There’s simply no stigma attached to walking around au naturel. This was in stark contrast to what I’d always experienced in the UK. I even saw a sign at a swimming pool in Essex once urging people to keep their swimsuits on in the showers “in the interests of modesty”.
Entering a sweaty wooden cabin full of happily naked people for the first time in Berlin was uncomfortable, of course.  I found myself grappling with self-consciousness on two fronts – over my own body and in an attempt to conceal my intrigue at the variety of appendages on display. But I enjoyed the ritual of the sauna, especially the Aufguss (meaning “infusion”) procedure, during which a member of staff pours scented water on hot coals and skillfully disperses the resulting heat around with fans, for an even, more intense, sensation. I’d never experienced anything as elaborate in the UK, where I’d only ever sporadically indulged in a sauna session following a swim or gym workout, provided there was one available (which wasn’t very often).
But in Germany, saunas are a common feature of most sports facilities and there are at least 20 public saunas in Berlin alone. Sauna culture is a big deal here. Last year, well over a quarter of the German population frequently went to the sauna or steam bath in their free time...

Gymnos is the Greek root word for "naked" or "bare" and you are likely familiar with its use in the word gymnasium which was named during the time period when athletes competed in the nude. It is plain to see from historical Greek artwork that the nude body was an object of admiration.
Gymnophobia, or the fear of nudity, is a highly personalized phobia that comes in many forms. Some people with this fear are afraid only of being naked in public, as is the case in communal showers or changing rooms. However, some people also fear being naked while they're with their partner or even when they're by themselves at home. Yet others are comfortable with their own nakedness but fear the nudity of others.
Many people with gymnophobia are unable to participate in sexual activities and may develop a more generalized genophobia, or fear of sex that stems from their gymnophobia. In extreme cases, this fear can even lead to ablutophobia, or fear of bathing or showering.
Causes
Gymnophobia can have many different causes. Comfort levels with nudity may vary by age, gender, the setting, and whether the lights are on or off. It can also depend on personal experiences, social media pressures, and cultural expectations.
In 2023, a group of clinicians provided the "Nudity Confidence Survey" to over 3000 Americans, and asked how comfortable they are being naked in varying situations. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the least comfortable and 10 being the most comfortable, people ranked situations as follows:...

In a recent post I discussed the unfortunate but obvious fact that the popularity of naturism in the U.S. has been declining for two or three decades. The evidence and likely reasons for this are reviewed at some length in that post. Concise summary: Fewer young people are entering naturism. If older naturists haven’t died or completely dropped out, they may spend more time in non-naturist activities to enjoy closer to home.
Younger generations commonly lack interest in - and even deprecate - many things older people consider important. Much of that is because younger people live mainly in a milieu of their peers that’s been shaped by recent events considerably different from what older people experienced. But some factors mitigate this effect. One is that individuals in a particular generation aren’t all alike - far from it. There’s always diversity. A second factor is that there are characteristics of attitudes and preferences that have intrinsic value and significance. Even if, for example, a style or type of music has lost popularity, there are reasons it still has value that simply isn’t appreciated as much as previously.
In particular, the characteristics of naturism and nonsexual social nudity that appealed to previous generations still exist. Naturists can still list many of them easily. The International Naturist Federation, for example, states that naturism is “a way of life in harmony with nature, characterized by the practice of communal nudity, with the intention of encouraging respect for oneself, respect for others, and respect for the environment.” Almost anyone would agree those are good things. But probably the first thing anyone who’s spent much time naked in a hospitable environment will think of is that being naked alone or with others simply feels really good...

During our Hiking Week you will meet different difficulty Levels for each Hike. For Friends of a well-groomed Hike there’s nothing that speaks against, because for every difficult Ascent or Descent, there is also an Alternative. So we can accommodate to Dog Owners.
However, you should bring a Minimum Level of Fitness and Head of Heights, as most Paths in Saxon Switzerland are mountainous and often lead along steep Slopes. In some Places it may also be necessary for a small Climb or handle one or the other Ladder. However, this is usually only limited to climb between two Stones, so Climbing Equipment is not necessary. However, this is the Charm of this particular Sandstone World…

A Plymouth naturist club is launching 'skinny-dipping' swim sessions at a Plympton Pool. Plymouth Sun Club has been an established naturist group for years and is now inviting others to join them with a new class.
The costume-free sessions for naturists, nudists and anyone who enjoys a 'clothing-optional' lifestyle, will be held at Plympton Pool at Harewood Park on the first Monday of each month at 8.30pm.
The group end their sessions with a drink in the pub and invite those who are wanting to try out the lifestyle to join them and try it out.
Matthew Day, Plymouth Sun Club Press and Publicity Officer, said: “We’re a friendly, welcoming group of all ages and shapes and sizes who come from all walks of life and thoroughly enjoy costume-free swimming.
"It’s great fun, and sociable too - we always end our sessions over a drink in the pub. So if you are a seasoned naturist or a first timer wanting to take the plunge, come along, you won’t regret it.”
Plymouth Sun Club say taboos around nudity are "eroding" and the health and well-being benefits of going naked are more widely understood, with more and more people wanting to get those fantastic, life-affirming feelings for themselves.

**Why Anti-Nudity Bills are Dumb**
Anti-nudity bills are a controversial topic that has been debated for years. The idea of such bills is to restrict public nudity, but they often end up being discriminatory and sexist. For instance, in 2015, a bill was proposed in New Hampshire that would make it illegal for women to show their nipples in public. This bill was met with opposition from many people, including Democratic New Hampshire Rep. Amanda Bouldin, who called it “sexist and completely unnecessary”. The bill’s co-sponsor, Republican Rep. Josh Moore, responded with a comment that appeared to advocate sexual assault on women who are topless in public. This is just one example of how anti-nudity bills can be problematic.
