  1. Ideocracy is an Idea Misspelled

Fans of the band Bury Me Standing will know from whence I thieved the title of today's post. According to Gralie Bohe's novel, The Boy in the Yellow Leatherette Portmanteau, Dante Jivanadalli originally wanted to call their first album of the new century Ideocracy is an Idea Mispelled, but Josue Baluende was emphatically against it. Teri Ainsworth and Ross Kerrinza also disliked it, but Jivanadalli remained stubborn. It took a long time for the band to persuade Jivanadalli out of his fervor, but when he did finally agree to abandon his argument, the band still did not have a title. The band considered releasing the album without a title but they had done that on their fifth album, and they did not want to do it again. They took a week away from each other, for everyone in the band to come up with a list of titles. They met up for "beer, beans, biscuits and bitchin" (Ainsworth's phrase for the process the band used to handle their interior conflicts) at Baluende's house in Whittlespear Beach. These get-togethers were informal and happenstance, but they had one strict rule: only the four members of the band attended. No one brought their personal support team, no friends, no wives, no agents, no managers, no gurus, no personal trainers, no assistants of any kind. They cooked their own food. The biscuits in "beer, beans, biscuits and bitchin" could be biscuits (buttermilk or sourdough) or they could be tortillas, corn chips or garlic bread. The beans could be nachos. […]

  2. Nautilids

Tattoo flash, no. 45, "Knotilus" I did not have anything planned for the Cephalopod Jamboree this year but then I realized I could post some examples from the "Knotilus" set of tattoos in our flash series. The word "knotilus" is of course a play on "nautilus". If I had a favorite cephalopod, the nautilus would be my second favorite, after the cuttlefish. Tattoo flash, no, 46, "One Hundred and Twenty Chambers" This tattoo gets its title from the number of chambers in a nautilus, which is […]

  3. Scapegracery

For jackalope families, the practice of rolling around in a big heap of fallen leaves is an autumn tradition known as the Scapegracery Frolic. On this third day of October, you are invited to celebrate your escape from grace and your escape from the machine. Most Inultarumet tribes use the word "scapegracery" (from the English word "scapegrace") for the concept of the holiday, but of course the festivities must have their own set of names in the languages of the Inultaru. Afwentuntuntin Odwog-boghem, from the To-inen-wa. Abattaganchu-zi Blawbeyah, from the jackalopes of the Second House. Alottelleh-josta Ontullut, from the Thontam-yenka tribe. Ashaentuntee-ow-rellun Jottay, from the Moss Folk. That last phrase from the Moss Folk can be translated as "Picking off the Sticky Leaves". You may have seen it translated as "Removal of Adherent Vegetation", which is an interpretation that is a bit more highfalutin and a bit more accurate. Moss, lichen, twigs, chaff are not leaves, yet these non-herbaceous bits may cling to your clothes after a roll through a mass jumble of wilderness. You may or may not choose to fling yourself into a huge leaf pile for your observance of today's holiday, but "picking off the sticky leaves" can be useful as a metaphor for tidying up the messiness of your psyche. Today we are going to uncling some leftover fragments of this and that, and leave them behind in this post. Fair warning for snark. Tattoo flash, no. 61, "Double Peony" […]

  4. Tirrab Tirrab

A former archivist at the Geranium Lake Properties Animist Sanctuary wrote a note attached to this image: "Discolored misprint from the DB published on Feb. 1rst Rabbit Rabbit Day." No one currently associated with the archive knows which newspaper is or was indicated by the abbreviation "DB". My own note will read "Unsure if this is an actual misprint. The discoloration may be the result of improper storage at the archive. DB may be an abbreviation for the Daily Bugle, a fictional newspaper/tabloid that has appeared in Marvel's Spider-Man comics. This kind of casual whimsy is not an exception to the standard practices or policies of the archive." I will actually sign my note with my initials, which the former archivist failed to do. […]

  5. Katadesmos

The date at the top of today's Geranium Lake Properties comic is the first day of the fourth week in the Procession of Entropy. November 11 is Katadesmostermymy, or Cursing Day, in the JMWL1 calendar. From notes we found in the Black Oxford Notebook (BON), we have learned there are several days that are eminently good for cursing people in the classical sense. For those occasions when you need to entreat a powerful entity to smite your enemy for the cause of perfect justice. […]

  6. A Poltergeist Hidden in the Flowers

Tattoo flash, no. 51, "A poltergeist hidden in the flowers" Today is Michaelmas. Today I had hoped to describe why, according to Jackalopian customs, Saint Michael is the archangel who gets assigned all the shit jobs by his boss.1 That post has tangled itself with Jackalopian tales about the durable but doomed relationship between Michael and the Morning Star, aka Astarte, Venus, Lucifer, Chak Ek and Yotrildochet, among many other names. I could not get that post straightened out into a less snarly jumble, so that's not happening today. It will have to wait for Part Two, which can be posted anytime between now and November 8 and I will still be timely for the holiday. Meanwhile, Dear Reader, we will have to accommodate ourselves with these slightly disjointed oddments. During their centuries-long dalliance with the Roman Catholic Church, the Inultaru never surrendered their traditional practices of animism. This caused some friction with the official representation of the religion, but the Inultaru were willing to meet the challenges with imagination, as long as the Church would accept their efforts with a measure of grace. Which the Church did, for a while. […]

  7. The Flash Hall at Prastuttle Gheyott

Today marks the official arrival of Autumn. We tried to make a post for the Autumnal Equinox but this post is the story that came without badgering the magic into the shape of the day. Today's entry is not an equinox thing, we already suffered that defeat in our previous post. This story is simply a tale that required to be told. It is not the Great Hall at Prastuttle Gheyott Manor that is famous. The great hall occupies a large space, the size of a sixteen-lane bowling alley perhaps, with a ceiling that is almost three stories tall. Two marble fireplaces sit opposite each other, carpets from Immel Bay and Tyresht cover the floor, tapestries from Ortazdu and Yulan hang on the walls. A Persepolitan column stands in an awkward alcove, and the requisite minimum of gold leaf decorates all suitable surfaces. But visitors to the castle do not come in droves to walk through the admirable Northern Renaissance Revival portico for a tour of the manor's Great Hall. […]

  8. More or Less Phonetic Homogeneity

The first rule for pronouncing Inultarumek words is this: They are spelled phonetically for English speakers, except when they are not, and when they are not, your guess is as good as mine. I do not have to guess about the pronunciation of name Tinnamcaiw because I have instructions plainly written by Yost in the Black Oxford Notebook (BON), which some people insist on calling the Black Oxford Workbook (BOW is an appellation used nowhere in the records of the archive). A minority of the Inultaru will pronounce Tinnamcaiw as Tin-nam-kay-ah or Tin-nam-ki-yuh, but by far the most common pronunciations are Tem-men-chetch-keh or Ten-nem-chetch-kuh. The vexatious "caiw" is not a common syllable in Inultarumek names, and most scholars agree that its origin belongs to the culture of the region known as Baeornuyawnelkwe (Bear Island River Lake). […]

  9. A Dozen Pages, Part 4 [ZINE]

This is the finishing post to a part of our zine project dubbed "A Dozen Pages". That is not a title, this part of the project has no title, these twelve pages were my contribution to a group project, the result of which was the abstract graphic novel A Kick in the Eye (2013). I will be sharing more abstract comic pages (for you to download and print!) at some point in the future, but right now I am not sure what I will post. It would be nice if The Fourth Labor of Elmer Olpuk finally saw the light of day, but that particular tale needs quite a bit of work. The twenty-four pages of My Favorite Martian Comics might be easier to post, but that is a huge commitment. I would like to add "Harrow" to our project, it is only five pages long, but it has an awkward square format - and I am not sure where I ferreted away its file. I hope I can find it, it would be a shame to lose it. […]

  10. Pieces Without a Puzzle

The season is changing. I feel the press of autumn on the threshold of my world. Summer is lingering, and will linger for a while yet. I can appreciate that, but I am glad for the fall. From a poem by Wendell Berry: "When I fall let me fall without regret like a leaf." His name can be spelled as Amsunteygralt or Amsonteygralt. We can call him the demalion of rabbits, by which we mean he is the demalion of a wild animal, because, like cats and ducks, no rabbit1 is domesticated to the […]

  11. A Dozen Pages, Part 2 [ZINE]

In this post I have included three more printable images of "A Dozen Pages" for our zine project. These pages first appeared in A Kick in the Eye, which was a collaborative book I made thirteen years ago with eleven other artists. These pages share a thematic cycle with Intrepid Spirits/The Book of Clea and Enoch and My Favorite Martian Comics. When we get around to posting the twenty-four pages from My Favorite Martian Comics, you will be able to combine all the images into a fairly cohesive book with a robust count of sixty pages. […]

  12. Night, Near Midnight

This Geranium Lake Properties comic was considered for the sixth day of the Eleven Monsters Holiday but it did not quite fit our criteria for the Red Beast theme. It was red enough, but it was not impeccably beastly. This panel was originally part of a series Yost made to illustrate the Thirty-Fifth Anniversary Edition of Six Tales from the Glorious Assemblage of Haberdashers by Abby Ashier Chertsey. The third tale in that book ("The Rust-Stained Jug") is about a man named Mike Frick, aka the King of Millers. Mike is neither a king nor a miller; he inherited his title from his father, who was also not a king nor a miller. Mike comes from a long line of men who were known as the Kings of the Mills, yet none of them were kings and not one of them was a miller. Yost borrowed this character with Chertsey's permission, and put Mike Frick the King of Millers into a short story titled "The Fine and Deadly Difference between Zossiyan and Znayossion Yogurts". […]

  13. A Dozen Pages, Part 1 [ZINE]

Today we are posting the first part of a 12-page addition to last year's zine project, Intrepid Spirits/The Book of Clea and Enoch. Some of you might recognize these pages, some of you will not. Most of the "viewers"1 of these pages will have no clue, because most of them are unreal, unalive machine programs laboring under the hysterical pretensions of the Most Wretched Masters of Industry Ever. 14. Qualms of Punctual Reincarnation

Today is the last day in our eleven-day celebration of the Eleven Monsters Holiday. We hope you enjoyed our retreat into the ancient hinterland of Geranium Lake Properties. Today is also the opening day of Ghost Month. If you wish, you can still download and print this image of Tilkeedu from last year's observance of an Inultaru tradition for Ghost Eve. Or you might want to refresh your memory about the concept of “common wrongness” from the Kurrotamohl Tea-drinkers.

  15. Homage and Memory

Today we making the penultimate (yep I love that word way too much) post in our celebration of the Eleven Monsters Holiday. Our theme for this Geranium Lake Properties retrospective has been "The Red Beast", a theme chosen with no input from the Ta Gosan Jacin. I do not expect or even hope they are aware of our little tribute for 2026.

  16. The Collapse of an Empire

"The collapse of an empire is the collapse of an illusion." This is a well-known proverb among the Inultaru, a threadbare and cobwebby platitude that jackalopes learn as children, oft-repeated by both tedious philosophers and provocative firebrands. The demalion behind the proverb is obscure. Elusive. Volatile. Protean. He is Ulkennaskio, called Zihlmissen by the jackalopes of the Second House, and Surtayo by the Moss Folk. […]

  22. Mithymnautica

If you wish to read (or review) information about the Monster Club, this post from last year can function as your gateway to what little I know about that fellowship. In this profoundly calamitous year of 2026, we are observing the Eleven Monsters Holiday of the Ta Gosan Jacin with a retrospective of eleven Geranium Lake Properties comics (today is Day Two), We will post one comic each day, for eleven days, the last day will be August 13, the first day of Ghost Month. Our theme is “The […]

  23. Eleven Monsters

I have written a tedious amount of inconsequential information about the Monster Club, and I do not feel any great motivation to write more. If you wish to read (or review) that material, this post from last year can function fairly well as your gateway to what little I know about the Ta Gosan Jacin. In this blessedly fearsome year of 2026, we are acknowledging the Eleven Monsters Holiday of the Ta Gosan Jacin with a retrospective of eleven Geranium Lake Properties comics, posting one comic […]

  25. Beantoss Mandala Time Ends Today

The last day of Beantoss Mandala Time is not a Jackalopian holiday and I have written no new material. Yesterday, or today, or tomorrow may be the holiday for the Passeggiata of Kalkatura Pumkta, which you can read about at the link provided. Or (also) you may enjoy reading about the holiday called Rakjangrimko, aka Ingrimko Unwa Walks Out, which was celebrated last week, or on July 13 for some people. One day in the future, the two holidays may become a five-day festival. I have been told […]

  26. Two Dilemmas

Included in today's Geranium Lake Properties comic are two dilemmas from The Forty-Nine Dilemmas of Elmer Olpuk, a book written by onetime-Buddhist-monk-now-a-barista Yixilmaq Alkupera. Alkupera borrowed the name of Elmer Olpuk from the Inultaru legend of a hero who is given twelve impossible tasks by an odious man named Uhratambo Drubjoy, who is a corrupt viceroy of the Hahnoqqiplu.1 Elmer Olpuk fails to achieve even one of his tasks. He attempts each of his Twelve Labors with meticulous […]

  27. Forty Years to the Day

Has it really been forty years (!)1 since we first glimpsed Christopher Michael Vaihal Utrillojamsken wearing a mask of the kolkesplir named Bliskemowgarth? We did not know (yet) that it was Christopher Michael who Jack Loki saw in a dream. Jack did not know that it was Christopher Michael behind the mask, and we did not know that Christopher Michael was Jack's great good friend since childhood. We did not find that out for almost five months.2 We did learn that Bliskemowgarth was a demalion […]

  28. Today is the Moon’s Day

Monahdayeg is the Inultaru word for Monday - are you surprised, just a little, that jackalopes use what is essentially the old Anglo Saxon word, Monandæg, for Monday? I was. Today I hope to chisel away some of the curse of Mondays, a curse I inherited from my elders in the Arahdansdag-ba (an explanation for that word will follow presently). Icon Number Forty-Forty features a mask of Sathurvannu, a demalion of the moon. There are many different interpretations for masks of the moon in Inultaru traditions; Sathurvannu is the demalion for the Moon in the Daytime Sky. Needful Magic, no. 113 Last month's solstice project instigated a flurry of cipher-making within the relationship between my asemic muses and the universe. […]

  29. Angles of Repossession

Yes, you have seen this mask before, in an episode of Vraicking titled "Dreams of Krishna". You also may have seen a version of this mask in one of the posters Yost created for Isona Semvashomky, the owner of the Black Clatter Café. Today's post is one of our Geranium lake Properties retrospectives. I have been feeling nostalgic, of late, for lost worlds, for the early part of this century, and for the Eighties and Nineties of the century before. I hope you can enjoy sharing that feeling as we look back at some of my favorite GLP panels. […]

  30. One Hundred Yards of Chert and Peat

This one is for those of you who are feeling nostalgic for the look of Geranium Lake Properties when it was printed in newspapers. I hope you will enjoy the grayscale and muted color palette (the third and fifth panels are examples of the usual color brightness found here in Vraicking). Interspersed between the panels are quotes said by the Wostim Gheyt Illuworna in conversation with Jack Loki, from the short story "One Hundred Yards of Chert and Peat". Which I am pretty sure was published1 in Swine and Swineherds, a single issue zine printed in 1996 by Jeff Braidwood. […]

  31. Hecate

This evening, after sundown, arrives the dark moon, the time for Hecate's Deipnon in the continental west of the Americas. Coincidentally, over at Bluesky, it is that time of year for making sigils for the community's summer solstice project. Yost and I were taught to spell her name with a "c", not a "k". I have considered bringing myself into alignment with the new scholarly consensus of "Hekate", but that spelling does not land with any oomph in my heart and mind (and possibly not in my soul either). Jackalopes of the Skeondil House are likely to spell her name as "Heca-tei".1 She sometimes wears the mask of the demalion Iffarresh-wut-Kyyatsee - or does Iffareesha wear the mask of Hecate? That is always the question. […]
