Buddhist Hermit Chanting: Bodhisattva Incense Cloud-Canopy • 念佛機 Nianfoji #1 – Von Edward A. Burger

Recorded in the quiet of his mountain hermitage in the Zhongnan Mountains of China, this is an intimate, unadorned field-recording of my Shifu chanting the name of Incense Cloud-Canopy Bodhisattva: nāmó xiāngyúngài púsà móhēsà 南無香雲蓋菩薩. The 24-minute vocal loop is presented without synthetic instruments or effects. For those who wish to learn this chant, the video includes timed subtitles with Chinese characters, Pinyin romanization, and English translation. About the chant: For this first post at Nianfoji, I’m sharing a recording of my Shifu chanting the name of Incense Cloud-Canopy Bodhisattva Mahasattva 南無香雲蓋菩薩摩訶薩: a cosmic bodhisattva embodying the sacred field of practice, manifesting as a vast, protective canopy of incense smoke that shelters and sustains all beings as they study and cultivate the Dharma. In Chán Buddhist monasteries in China, twice a month, on the full and new moons, the community Morning Liturgy integrates a special Incense-offering Ritual to purify both sacred space and mind. During this ritual, the assembly chants the Xiāng Zàn “Incense Praise” and this threefold invocation of Incense Cloud-Canopy Bodhisattva’s name. Although I learned this as a monastic tradition, it offers a lovely blueprint for a daily liturgy at home. A lay practitioner can light a stick of incense and recite this invocation three times to ground and purify a space to begin their daily practice.
