Hi.
I use @localsend between macOS and GrapheneOS. My Mac can detect my phone, but my phone cannot detect the Mac when @mullvadnet “Local network sharing” and Android’s “Block connections without VPN” are both enabled.
Disabling “Block connections without VPN” immediately fixes it. Is there a way to keep VPN lockdown enabled while allowing LocalSend to work over LAN?

CW: VPNs, hating spineless corpos, and loathing Fascists.
Decided to remove Mullvad VPN from my computer, and I will also be taking it off of my phone as well because. I can't in good faith use a service that doesn't chastise their founder for supporting a fundamentally fascist movement. Instead, the account holder of the Mullvad Mastodon wrote a post using a hand-wringing, feeble tone to communicate a tepid and neutral stance when people started to mention the account. Trying to reduce the obvious harm it would cause the business when people started to find out about the co-founder's huge donation to a fashy political movement. That wouldn't have been able to platform anyone this year without that donation...
NextDNS is going to be a stop-gap until I find a good VPN that isn't horrible. Also one that doesn't say RTFM a paying user as well (looking at very particular provider on that one).
I need a VPN that actively stands against Fascists and doesn't bleat about being politically neutral. As if there is one thing that fascists probably hate more than anything is a safe and private internet. Fascists and their co morbid political bedfellows want to be able to see and nuke their enemies, prevent them from accessing information that would combat fascist regimes.
To stop communication that would help organize and resist those fascist fucks.

I'm looking for a new VPN provider as like many people, I'm not particularly thrilled with the actions Mullvad's co-CEO has taken. Any good recommendations? Preferably one that provides a good native Linux client.

That is why I find #IVPN the most convincing #VPN provider after looking around for alternatives to #MullvadVPN.

And they run https://www.doineedavpn.com/, which for many people I know would simply lead to the realization, that they, in fact, do not need a VPN. -
Regarding the follow up question of "what should I use if no commercial VPN solves my issue"...
...that entirely depends on what you need a VPN for.
For many folks, modern HTTPS (TLS) covers what many VPNs sought to address - namely, limiting who can see your secure traffic.
For folks using public or non-personal wifi, the local router implementing wireless isolation prevents folks on your subnet from sniffing your traffic (https/tls helps here too).
For folks wanting to hide their browsing habits - shifting the inspection of traffic from their ISP to some for-purpose honeypot may not be the best solution.
Also, you'll always get the "spin up your own VPN" answer in these sort of threads, but as has already been pointed out this isnt something most folks can do (it is straightforward to do!!!! Iffff... you have the knowledge and experience.... which most folks don't have. They are focusing on other things in life, etc).
Two big things to consider here:
1) What are you actually trying to accomplish with a VPN? Specifics. Not just "increased privacy" or "increased security". What. Exactly. Are you trying to accomplish. And then sort out if a VPN actually does that thing for you. (Many are just snake oil promising to meet your valid desire for general health but dont actually do the thing they promise).
2) There might not be a viable solution to your need. Sometimes the answer is "this proposed solution is a scam, and there is no alternative - no actual solution. You have a real need and there is no real thing to meet that need. Sorry."

All "privacy oriented" commercial VPNs are honeypots.
You can't change my mind on that.
Mullvad VPN has heavy marketing in Washington DC (their ads are plastered all across the metro stops frequented by government workers and foreign diplomats) for example.
The whole "you need to hide something? here we'll hide it for you! Everyone that wants to hide something should put is all in this one consolidated place!"
But they totally won't look at it.
They swear.
No logs, bro. I promise. I can look, but I won't. I could log, but I won't.
So while Mullvad the company is showing their ass, asking what other VPN to hop to begs the question: Why are you using a commercial VPN?
If it's to change your IP address to bypass porn restrictions in fundamentalist theocratic states, then cool. That's a solid use case.
If it's for a nebulous reason like "for privacy" or "for security". Then you might want to see if that tool actually meets your specific threat modeling.

Mullvad VPN's CEO has been caught supporting Sweden's far-right political party. In fact, the CEO is the party's largest individual financial donor.
I would suggest IVPN ( @ivpn ) as an alternative. iVPN stays out of politics, except when advocating for privacy and opposing surveillance.
That said...
When I previously pointed out that Proton VPN's CEO was a strong supporter of Donald Trump, or that Proton falls under U.S. jurisdiction, a group of people tried to perform mental gymnastics to defend Proton. They claimed that any alternative was no better or insisted that alternatives failed to meet whatever qualifying buzzwords they chose.
Today, I see those same types of people doing the same thing — defending Mullvad VPN while attempting to dismiss and degrade any suggested alternative.
The Fediverse has a group of politically right-leaning individuals who have learned not to express their support for fascism as directly, but instead to do so more passively in the hope of influencing others.
Standing up for companies led and owned by fascists while claiming "that's different" when comparing a company with the people leading it (Brave Browser, for example) is one way they encourage others to ignore what happens behind the scenes. Talking down alternatives that are not associated with fascism, or claiming they are no better for vague "reasons" (insert random excuse here), is another way these individuals encourage people to turn a blind eye.
No matter what alternative I or anyone else suggests, the important thing is that you choose one that does not support fascism. Don't turn a blind eye, and don't let someone else's mental gymnastics make you question whether you should switch providers.
