#muc2024 — Public Fediverse posts

Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #muc2024, aggregated by home.social.

  1. On behalf of the General Chairs Alexander Mädche, @kathringerling and Michael Beigl as well as Technical Program Chair @svenmayer and Practice Track Chair Thomas Jackstädt (@GUPAVizePraesi) we want to say goodbye, and thank everyone for a fantastic #muc2024.

  2. Alright, I'm on the train home, which feels like the conclusion to my #MuC2024 @mucConf attendance. 🙂 It was a lot of fun again this year and I gotta make sure I can attend again in 2025.

My conferece schedule this time was noticeably workshop-heavy. That's in pretty stark contrast to back when I started going to MuC, when I didn't know anyone in the community and just went to all the paper sessions by default. At the cost of seeing fewer paper presentations, the workshops were wonderful!

  3. Before I forget: high five to @GUPAVizePraesi for the prominent Mastodon link in his portion of the closing plenary slides. Let's keep growing this community! 😃 #MuC2024 #MuC2025 #HCI #UX

  4. Finished up my #MuC2024 conference lunch, heading back to the hotel next and then to the train station. 🙂 Next year's #MuC2025 feat. @tucmi should be cool, looking forward to the organizers' ideas that were hinted at in the closing session.

  5. Last #MuC2024 day! Today's the only paper session I'm able to catch, and it is the one with the most co-authors active on here:

    * “Beyond Textbooks: A Study on Supporting Learning of Molecule Naming in a Virtual Reality Environment” co-authored by @viktoriaPammerSchindler
    * “Hands-free Selection in Scroll Lists for AR Devices” co-authored by @svenmayer
    * “Tick-tock: Revisiting the Influence of Zeitgebers and Cognitive Load on Time Judgments during and after VR Immersion” co-authored by @flarion

  6. My last #MuC2024 activity of the day (I skipped the evening socializing) was this panel on (in-)accessibility of academia: muc2024.mensch-und-computer.de co-run by @pascoda and with @lavolsky on stage among others. It covered a lot of interesting ground that I'm finding tough to summarize, but the panelists bounced off each other very well. @mariawolters live-posted a more play-by-play style commentary if you'd like to read some details.

Now: sleep. Tomorrow: paper session "Immersive Realities". 🙂

  7. Our little meetup @muc2024meetup ended up being a bit smaller than planned due to short-term cancellations, but we made it work.

We talked about advantages of non-corporate social media for academics, about different ActivityPub platforms and clients, about ideas to foster fediverse use in academic circles through "living by example" rather than trying to persuade people directly.

Fun group of participants. Tragically we failed to finish all the snacks, so I have to take some home. 😱

  8. My presentation in the Urban Future workshop at #MuC2024 went well, despite stretching the time limit. If you missed it, you can find a prerecorded video version with optional subtitles in German and English, as well as the presentation slides, on my website with the position paper: :fietkau_science: fietkau.science/reflecting_sma

The rest of the workshop was really fun too! 😀 Running a hybrid workshop as a first-timer is no small feat. The organizers are not on here, but I gave my praise directly.

  9. #muc2024 @lavolsky - far too often people w disabilities are not involved. International academic: diversity is tickboxing right now. First generation: many projects claim that they are participatory - but they really are NOT

  10. #muc2024 @lavolsky: we need more openly disabled lecturers, supervisors, teachers. Pressure to overachieve because they have a unique opportunity. International academic: accessibility needs to be cross sectional, not vertical siloed. First generation: nothing about us without us. Inclusion is NOT an ideology

  11. #muc2024 international academic: the international students must adapt to host culture and working styles - but need transparency, communication, and grace. Studying in a different country is already super hard

  12. Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz particularly difficult for first generation- how to finance completing PhD? Also expectation of extra curriculars for scholarships - difficult if having to work to finance studies #muc2024

  13. #muc2024 the Deaf panellist is @lavolsky who gave a great talk at the preceding session. International academic challenges: why do I need to learn how to be a woman in tech? Why can’t recruiters learn to avoid bias? Why lack of accountability? First generation: middle class professors have no idea what it’s like to have a different background

  14. Lack of orientation and information for first generation students - entrenched discrimination of people from non- academic backgrounds. #muc2024

  15. Three perspectives: A Deaf academic, an international academic from India, a first generation academic #muc2024 people don’t know how to work with Deaf people - additional work to educate, get knowledgeable, and having to feel grateful. Lack of information or mentors / role models for international students

  16. Live tooting from #muc2024 panel on. #accessibility. We are looking at drivers - ICP model of disability, legal drivers such as UN CRPD and EU accessibility act

  17. Good morning! 🌞 After a negative COVID test and a nice breakfast, I'm off to the #MuC2024 opening keynote. Letting myself be surprised there, didn't research who's presenting.

I can't help but feel I lucked out with the hotel that the travel department booked for me. It is a half hour walk to the venue, but it doesn't feel like it when most of the way looks like this. #Karlsruhe #Schlossgarten

  18. I coincidentally didn't have any workshops I was registered for today, so I got to travel a day late.

Did miss out on MuC's #RecSys-adjacent #ABIS workshop though: fg-abis.gi.de/veranstaltung/ab

My team colleague Laura Stojko presented a part of her dissertation research there: “A Holistic Approach: Personalizing Large Semi-Public Displays for Intercultural Groups” You can find it here: dl.gi.de/handle/20.500.12116/4

@jannis was there today as well, follow him too if you do #RecSys stuff!
