Many years ago, in the army at Fort Hood, Texas, I was an artilleryman, but because I graduated from high school and had a good GT score, the commander made me an acting sergeant and supply sergeant. As happens, I somehow lost our field latrine. It was just a box with a hole in the top. We would dig a hole and set the box on top of the hole. Of course, we had a canvas screen to go around the latrine. Well, I built a new better latrine. A double seater (I was young a dumb and it seemed like a good idea), with real toilet seats. I painted it camouflage colors and added handles on the ends for moving. The problem was my first sergeant was short and his feet didn't touch the ground. So ...

It stormed last night. At about one in the morning, I heard Ben bark, so I got up and opened the bedroom door. Of course, Ben and Charlie were both there, they get scared when it thunders. I laid back down. Ben crawled under the bed, and Charlie flopped down wherever, and we all went back to sleep. Until about 06:30 when Charlie decided it was time to get up.

I can't exactly emphasize with Ben and Charlie, but it seems like I can come close. Or perhaps it's just compassion. Either way, they are both good decent states of mind, worthy of practicing in public.

Oh, if you don't already know, Ben and Charlie are dogs.
