  1. Good morning. 🕊️🕊️🕊️

    24 May 2026

Hmm… I still have a hoodie draped over the back of my side chair. I should probably hang it in the closet, because I definitely won’t have the urge to grab it on the way out the door for a few months. It is still spring, though, and there could always be an odd temperature drop. We’ve lived in Louisiana for well over twenty years now, and I don’t recall any freezing temperatures in May — but it did get close in 2019, on May 4th, when the temperature dropped to a frigid 34°F. This late in May, though, I think it’s safe to put my hoodie away.

Uh‑oh, it’s time to feed Charlie. I’ll be back.

Charlie and I are baching it for a while. My wife is away. We’d only been home from our trips to Arkansas and Oklahoma for six days when an early‑morning call had her packing again. She headed out yesterday morning for Mobile, Alabama. We tried to board Charlie so I could go with her, but being Memorial Day weekend — and on such short notice — that plan fell flat.

It was tragedy that sent my wife rushing off. A young niece lost her husband just after giving birth to their daughter. I won’t share the details, but it was sudden and completely unexpected — the kind of loss that hits with a “this can’t be real” shock that knocks a person’s world apart. My wife went to be by her side, to help her navigate the aftermath of this terrible, terrible event, and to try to assuage the anguish in our niece’s heart.

Life is thinner than we like to admit. One moment you’re moving through the small routines of an ordinary day, and the next, everything tilts. It doesn’t take much — a phone call, a breath, a heartbeat — for the whole world to change. That’s the fragile truth of it, and all we can do is hold on to each other while we have the chance.

“We live in the shelter of each other.” — Irish proverb

  2. It's hard to make out unless you have the volume right up, but a fair amount of "cooing" went along with this performance 🙂 A City Dove (probably my favourite name for them) doing what they do best 😍 #citydove #citypigeon #streetpigeon #feralpigeon #rockdove | #kent #england

  3. Urban Pause

While walking through Savannah, Georgia a few months ago, I spotted this lone rock pigeon perched on a weathered pipe running along a stone wall.

If you're a fan of stunning dove imagery, be sure to explore my photo gallery for a collection of beautiful snapshots that capture their elegance and charm.

    Cold Thresholds and Army Paperwork

Wow. I just glanced at the temperature on my taskbar—47º outside. That’s the coldest morning of the fall so far this year. I know, I know… folks up in Minnesota are probably thinking, “Big whoop. That’s shirt-sleeve weather.”

I lived in Minnesota for a while during my Army days. I’d just been reassigned from Germany and thought I understood cold. Minnesota politely—and thoroughly—redefined that understanding. I drove up from Tennessee after flying in from Wyoming. That month was a blur of relocations, a sovereign zigzag across the country. But that’s a story for another scroll.

A few days after arriving in Minnesota, I had to fly to Fort Sheridan in Chicago to sign in. I was Regular Army, assigned to a Reserve battalion. On arrival, I rented a car, drove to a certain building on post, walked in, probably handed over my orders, signed a book, turned around, got back in the rental, and drove straight back to Minnesota. Crazy, right?

When I returned to Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport, the temperature had dropped. On advice, I’d parked my car over at neighboring Fort Snelling and taken a taxi to the airport. It was late at night. The moment I stepped outside, the cold hit me like a wall—literally took my breath away. I don’t recall the exact temperature, only that it was very cold. 🥶

I jumped into the first taxi I saw and headed for Fort Snelling. The parking lot was vast and empty, save for my car sitting alone in the middle, blanketed in snow. I asked the driver to wait until I got it started. He did. And just like that—I had arrived.

  6. Nap Time

Is this rock pigeon (Columba livia) napping—or simply bracing against the cold? Like many birds, pigeons possess the remarkable ability to rest one hemisphere of their brain while the other remains alert. A sovereign act of vigilance: sleeping with one eye open, so to speak.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

  7. Pigeon on the Manuscript Branch

Rock pigeons (Columba livia) often lend themselves well to black and white photography, where their layered plumage and urban poise translate into striking contrasts and quiet texture.

  8. Good morning. 🕊️🕊️🕊️

    9 July 2025

I have a scar healing on my right knee from one of those garage door accidents you always hear about. I just realized it’s shaped like an “F,” and I can't help but wonder—could it be a supernatural sign? After all, the word that flew out of my mouth when my knee hit the door started with that very letter.

Yesterday, I picked up a new pair of glasses—my first with tortoiseshell frames. While reading, I’ve noticed the little flecks of light in the pattern can be a bit distracting. I’m sure I’ll get used to it. I got used to the floaters in my eyes, didn’t I? Funny thing is, I hadn’t even noticed them until an eye doctor pointed them out. Then, for a while, I couldn’t unsee them.

  9. Amber Eyes of the Rock Dove

This rock dove (Columba livia) is a frequent visitor to my backyard, easily recognized by the distinctive white epaulettes on his shoulders. Surely, he must be some kind of officer, don’t you think? In this image, he seems to be staring me down, likely keeping watch while the others feed.

If you’re unfamiliar with the name “rock dove,” you probably know them simply as pigeons or rock pigeons. But make no mistake—they are still very much doves.

If you're a fan of stunning dove imagery, be sure to explore my photo gallery for a collection of beautiful snapshots that capture their elegance and charm.

  10. Missed Opportunity

I missed the chance to capture a hawk soaring above the forest this morning. Instead, here’s a pigeon, doing its best impression of an eagle, that stopped by earlier.

  11. White Dove in Grass

This almost all white rock dove (Columba livia) stopped by for a few days months ago. The bird didn't quite fit in with the other pigeons that would drop by. Then it stopped coming, I assume that some predator got the bird. Wait ... stop ... think happy thoughts.

  12. Soaring High: Capturing a Pigeon Mid-Flight

Although, they are a nuisance because they mob my bird feeders, rock doves (Columba livia) beautifully perform synchronized flights around the neighborhood that are wonderful to watch.

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

  14. Garden Gaze: Pigeons in Repose

As I've mentioned, I have a gallery of my favorite photos at:

    swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

Go there and take a look. Prints are for sale along with other doodads and I suppose it is kind of a business for me. But it's the kind of business where I don't care whether I sale anything or not. If you want something, by all means you are welcome to make a purchase. But I just want you to visit and maybe mark your favorites or leave a comment. Cheers 😄

  15. A Sign from Above?

I was trying to repair a garage door this morning when I noticed the white rock dove (Columba livia) in my backyard. It was easy to determine that I'd never seen that pigeon before, so I stopped what I was doing and went and got my camera. It reminded me of that old country song performed by Ferlin Husky. Pigeons are doves you know.

He sends his pure sweet love

  16. Grey Feather Focus

This rock dove (Columba livia) wasn't the only pigeon in my yard this morning. I ran out of food, and I think that they were waiting for me rectify the situation. The pigeons started trying to eat out of my hanging feeders, but they have to hover to do that, and they cannot hover very long. Because of their size, they tend to push the other birds out, but I noticed this morning some finches pushing back.

  17. I Gotta Feeling, Someone's Watching Me 🎶

I don't know why I kept this image. The birds are completely out of focus, but they are arranged in-line like a council of elders looking down on me. What they are, are pigeons waiting for me to go inside so that they can hit the feeder.

You won't find this photo in my gallery, but you can still visit at:

  18. Good morning. 🕊️🕊️🕊️

    3 April 2024

I may have mentioned that I don't like going anywhere and only leave the house out of necessity. All of my needs and wants are right here. Now I just mostly piddle around. Surprisingly, I left the house twice yesterday, once for an appointment and once to go to the store. In the olden days, you might have found me sitting at a bar nursing a beer in my off time. Did you know piddling and babbling are behaviors that complement each other? Piddling involves doing things just to keep busy. Babbling is talking aimlessly about nonsense, kind of what I'm doing now. But I have to go somewhere again this morning, so I need to fill this space quickly. Cheers ;-)

The bird bath makes an excellent setting for bird pictures. Even the rock pigeons (Columba livia) show up for a shooting sesion.

  20. Good morning. 🕊️🕊️🕊️

    17 January 2024

I'm in my office sipping coffee as usual this morning, I turned the lights off in the family room so that Ben and Charlie would lay down and nap after going outside. But they are both in here with me. Ben is moving around in a fidgeting kind of way because Charlie laid down in his spot behind my chair. Dogs are funny that way, they have their routine and don't want to deviate from it too much. It's a carpeted room, so you would think that one spot would be as good as another, but you would be wrong. Maybe it's because it's close to my computer where there is a little more warmth. Ben is pickier than most. Hmmm ... Charlie just moved to the other side of my chair and Ben ... well Ben is now curled up in his favorite spot in my office. Happy ending😆.

  21. Angel Wings

Many of the photos that I capture aren't as crisp as I like, but I like the way that they look anyway. This rock pigeon (Columba livia) with white spots is one of those, perhaps the slight blur shows motion.

  22. Napoleon

This rock pigeon (Columba livia) hangs out at my back yard, much more than the other pigeons so I figured that I had to call him something. Notice that he isn't exactly starving.

"One domestic homing pigeon, a “retired” U.S. Army Signal Corps bird named Levi, lived to be 31 years old. Feral Rock Pigeons have shorter life expectancies, averaging only 2.4 years. However, a Kansas bird was 6 years, 2 weeks old when it was recaptured and rereleased." - allaboutbirds.org
