  2. Kirby Bank — A Hill With a Past

Bluebells pour down the sun-baked flank of Kirby Bank above the plain of Cleveland. Gorse burns yellow across the slopes. Below, the white walls of the Pybus Scout Centre gleam in the spring light. Beyond the green patchwork of fields, Roseberry Topping rises on the far hor ...

  3. Egglestone Abbey— The Poorest House in England

Just under two miles south-east of Barnard Castle, the remains of Egglestone Abbey stand above the south bank of the Tees. They are, not to put too fine a point on it, rather good.

Egglestone was a Premonstratensian house, founded around 1195. The Premonstratensians — known ...

  7. An Echo of Grosmont Priory

The Grandmontine Priory of Grosmont was established around 1200 at a site overlooking the River Esk. It was one Joan de Turnham who granted the site to the monks, and according to the deed of gift, a "mansion house" already existed there. Its surrounding fields, covering about 200 acres, were already in cultivation, evidenced by the use of the word "l ...

  8. Today I finished transcribing the monastic chronicle from the convent I’m researching. The back portion included two Latin abstracts and one German abstract which largely agree in content but not always exact details. It’s clear that there was an effort to elevate one of the early Maisterin, so we get two short miracle stories in and among other details

The work of assessment is a task for another day; today we celebrate “being done, part one”!

  9. Any thoughts or ideas on publicising the Kowethas Kernow project?

It's essentially designed to be a dispersed Celtic Monastic-style community for people who enjoy traditional forms of church (music, art, architecture, food, liturgy etc) but who are also doubters, dissenters, heretics, agnostics, atheists, and Humanists.

  10. Update on the 1618 comet:

for some reason, the back part of the chronicle has a somewhat revised narrative; this one mentions that the comet ("star") has multiple tails. The narrator here is less daunted by the event than was the early.

If it were my period, I'd be doing a detailed comparison of the differences. Neat that it's there, though! Did the sisters have second thoughts about the gloom-and-doomness of the principle text?

  11. Cool; my nun reports on the brightest of the three comets of 1618, and uses it as occasion to pray "for the Christian church, which is in the greatest danger, and for the House of Austria"

Clearly, anxiety is still running high. (We're less than a decade away from the great storm); trauma-informed readings of natural events are still at the core of this section of the chronicle.

  12. This 17th century narrator is excessively interested in the weather. On the other had, the nuns nearly starved after the horrible storm wiped out the crops one fall, so we are seeing the legacy of #trauma in what draws her attention

  15. The plot thickens.

So a donor donated a likable 25" Dell HDMI monitor. This elevated the usable resolution to a much more realistic 720p (by which the #monastic could see everything clearly). But #Linux #Mint specifies a minimum resolution of 1024x768, not 1280x720! So the insufficient *vertical* pixel height causes some disorientation, with screen elements getting crushed below the bottom of the screen.

Only 6% of modern desktops/laptops go so low as 720p:

  16. My good deed of the week is to help a fellow #monastic
with an older #laptop setup - tricky because they need Simplified #Chinese input, plus they have a #VisualImpairment.

This required a low resolution (a trick to approximate "fractional scaling"), and a high-contrast theme: dark, but ideally not solarized.

Linux Mint Mate was a fail (menu no good at 480p), then#Linux #Mint #XFCE worked. It's performant enough - barely.
