  1. Saw this cool millipede (might be a a yellow-spotted millipede? Harpaphe haydeniana?) in a little day hike last Sunday. Ended up seeing several, but they were so cool.

  6. I had just gotten home and was taking pics of the bristle millipedes that come out at night to browse the lichen on the stonework, when a neighbour, a middle-aged lady I sort of recognized but had never really spoken to, passed by and asked what I was doing, if I was making a movie or whatever. I explained I was looking at bugs and showed her the bristle millipedes. She excitedly said she liked bugs as well, cicadas and beetles and butterflies and such, and we mutually enthused for a few minutes. I guess talking to neighbours is sometimes worth it.

Experimental evidence supports gradual #evolution of alkaloid sequestration in poison frogs: Adriana Jeckel et al. royalsocietypublishing.org/rsp

  17. 🦊🐛 In the forests of #Madagascar, #lemurs have learned to use #millipedes as a specialized form of #medicine.

By gently biting the #insects, the #primates trigger the release of defensive #chemicals that act as a potent repellent against #malaria-carrying #mosquitoes. The lemurs rub the secretions into their fur and even ingest small amounts to treat internal parasites. The toxins cause a brief, trancelike state.

  28. Visible here is a #Julida #diplopode, a taxon with ca 750 species worldwide. #Diplopods are important decomposers of #deadwood or #leaflitter; their high food requirements and corresponding excrements make them important #humusproducers. Despite the name #millipedes, almost all diplopods have no more than 750 #legs. An exception is #Eumillipes #persephone (Siphonotidae) described by P. E.Mark et al.(2021),with 1,306 legs.
