Finally, a #centipede!
People are scared when one of these fellows runs across the floor. However I think they're fascinating. This one here is a smaller species, but its relative, the Mediterraenean banded centipede, can grow to lengths up to ~18 centimetres.

I just saw the first house centipede of the year in the family room. Next up: wolf spiders in the garage.

fucking huge desert centipede scared the absolute piss out of me today. went to refill my bearded dragon's water bowl to see this creature underneath, jazz handing all over the place at mach speed. managed to get it into a container.
looks like it got my bearded dragon, though - I was wondering why he was so lethargic yesterday, I hope he is ok. I have a huge appreciation for all arthropods but this got my heart racing faster than anything. #centipedes

Here in New Zealand we have the hura, NZ giant centipede, Cormalocephalus rubriceps. It can grow to over 25 cm long and is known to eat small reptiles and amphibians as well as invertebrates. The largest individuals of hura are now only on offshore islands, as those on the mainland tend to get eaten by rats before they can reach gigantic size.
The related Phillip Island centipedes (Cormocephalus coynei), from the Norfolk Island group, have been calculated to eat up to 3,700 seabird chicks each year. (!!)

The journal Frontiers in Ecology & Evolution has an article out reviewing cases of centipede predation of vertebrates, "documenting centipede predation on amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and occasionally fish".
"Our synthesis highlights the underappreciated role of scolopendrid centipedes as mid-level predators capable of influencing small vertebrate populations"

Good lake visit today
1. Scenery
2. The _Bryobia_ clover mites are loving the warm weather.
3. A linyphiid, I think? Else a theridiid?
4. A slow-moving (for once) lithobiomorph centipede.#DailySpiderPic #DailyMitePic #SpidersOfMastodon #Mitestodon #bugstodon #arachnids #spiders #mites #centipedes #Araneae #Acari #Myriapoda

Happy to have taken a long journey via #NightTrain to the #NorthSea for a myriapoda workshop.
Here we learn how to properly identify #Diplopoda #Chilipoda and #Collembola.
I took with me my #alpine species to identify 🤓

Was going to add the hashtag "InsectSaturday" until I remembered: myriapods aren't insects! Also, now it's Sunday here.
Anyway, here's my pet house centipede having a bit of homemade peach syrup on a Q-tip. Do try this at home!

How to see without #eyes or a protein that senses #light
#Centipedes clearly respond to light, as anyone trying to stomp one before it rushes back under a rock or wall will know. Yet they don't seem to have eyes and lack the #genes, but they have an organ that selectively heats up when exposed to lighthttps://arstechnica.com/science/2023/02/how-to-see-without-eyes-or-a-protein-that-senses-light/
