Smoke and Whispers (The Oxford Investigations #4) by Mick Herron

I’ve had problems with book titles before, and I kind of do here. Smoke and Whispers does nothing for me. I don’t think it has anything much to do with the content. There’s certainly no Oxford in here, since it is set in Newcastle. And as to whether …

… this can really be classified as a Zoë Boehm Thriller, well.
It’s certainly the case that Miss Marple doesn’t turn up until quite late on in A Pocket Full of Rye, and I guess there must be plenty of other precendents for the hero detective showing up quite late. But though the shadow of Zoë Boehm does fill these pages, the woman herself is decidedly off screen throughout. Thinking of the recent Apple TV adaptation of the first book in this series, if you had hired, say Emma Thompson to play the main character, and there were eight episodes, she might appear in episode 8? And maybe not for its whole length.
It’s actually Sarah Tucker who is the main point of view character here, and who does most of the legwork. There are other reminders of the first book in the series, too, as if the author wanted to return and scratch a few itches.
Sarah arrives in Newcastle because a body has been pulled out of the Tyne, and the body appears to be wearing Zoë’s clothes and carrying Zoë’s stuff. But it has been in the water for quite a few days, so Sarah can’t be sure… And that leather jacket: wasn’t it taken by the target of the investigation in the second book?
Mick Herron, of course, is a master of misdirection. Except, if you know this fact, you are on the alert for all the misdirections, so they don’t really work. Certain characters seem to have a lampshade hung on them, for example. And you know that whoever Sarah points a finger at, Doctor Watson style, will not be correct.
This was 99p, so I bought it, which means I have now read three of the four Zoë Boehm Thrillers available, with just the third instalment missing from my set. But because this actually throws back to books 2 and 3, I didn’t feel the lack.
I do wonder if Apple, when they bought the rights, had bothered reading this far. Special Guest Star?

Not as good as some of the others in the series. I got the feeling that Herron may be getting tired. Yes, it does have the usual characters and Lamb seems to be more obnoxious that usual.

Mick Herron has a knack of creating thrilling stories with dark humour which are almost flawless. The fact that he’s been able to create two worlds in which these take place — ‘Slough House’ and the ‘Zoë Boehm’ novels — makes him almost too good to allow him to continue writing. Someday soon a group of writers, jealous of his gifts, will knock on his door, drag him behind the shed, and give him the boots until he smartens up. They might even bring their own shed for the purpose.
Emma Thompson (as the protagonist Zoë Boehm) is so good in this I want to follow her around and bring her tea and biscuits with the hope she might remember my name. Ruth Wilson (as principal victim Sarah Trafford) could probably get me to lie down in the gutter so she could avoid getting her shoes wet by walking over my back. Everyone else is equally brilliant.
My goodness, this is stupendous!
