I do this rap stuff every year#Boston born Keith Elam, aka Guru, was half of the rap group #GangStarr, whose use of jazz samples and relaxed style helped stretch #HipHop towards #AcidJazz, even explicitly as in their track “Jazz Thing” filled with #jazz samples, callouts to jazz greats, culminating in the proclamation “The 90s will be the decade of a jazz thing.”
And for Guru it was, as he assembled a lineup of premiere jazz players and wove his raps with their live performance on the first of his Jazzmatazz albums in 1993.
Guru would integrate more sounds of soul music as the series progressed. Here we find singer #MicaParis joining him, her line echoing War’s “Slipping Into Darkness,” adding a hint of another spice to the stew.
