mags and willow as painted by dixie

Dixie Dellamorto hand-painted this colorful miniature portrait of Meteor Mags and Willow partying in 2025. Explore more of Dixie’s artwork on Instagram: @mondodellamorto

I think Mags and Willow would be great in a comic book together… so I wrote the scripts for a three-issue comic-book story for them! Get a copy of the official script book on Amazon! It’s a wild ride.

Original Comic-Book Scripts for Meteor Mags and Willow in “Saturnalia”

My full-length comic-book scripts for the three-issue story Saturnalia are now collected in a paperback edition, available on Amazon for $9.95. It’s an action-packed thrill ride in the “bad girls” tradition, as the space-pirate Meteor Mags and her demonic friend Willow rampage their way through a science-fiction/fantasy adventure that takes them from the most opulent casino in the Solar System to the depths of Hell itself!

Also included is a short script for an unpublished episode of “Legends of the Dracorex”, featuring sci-fi dinosaur mayhem!

the first script for a meteor mags comic book

At the most opulent casino in the Solar System, in Saturn’s orbit, Meteor Mags and her demonic pal Willow get trapped inside a new Virtual Reality game with increasingly insane combat levels and no apparent way out. Meanwhile, Patches the cat ransacks the buffet.

Below is a link to a PDF of the first script for a Meteor Mags comic book, created in collaboration with my dear friend and literary executor. Unlike my graphic novel Legends of the Dracorex, it isn’t intended to be canon with the material published in the three Meteor Mags omnibuses. More about that after the link.

Why isn’t it canon? Because we thought it would be fun to do something a little different, to tell a story that doesn’t need to fit into all the established continuity. To have the freedom to incorporate far-out sci-fi ideas I wasn’t comfortable with inserting into the universe of the main fiction series, or elements of magic and fantasy that wouldn’t properly fit there—in essence, to return to the anarchic state of “absolutely anything goes” that I enjoyed so much when I first began writing about Mags and her adventures.

In fact, as I’ve said before in my memoir on the subject, my earliest ambition for Mags was to make comics about her adventures. But because I can’t draw sequential art to save my life, and began with a budget of zero dollars, I took a shot at writing prose instead.

At first, I wasn’t very good at all, but it was more fun than I expected, so I ran with it and worked on my craft over the years—all alone at first, until I felt confident enough to organize a writers’ critique group for the sole purpose of getting some useful feedback and taking my writing to the next level. That endeavor went far better than expected and grew into a self-sustaining group where I made new friends, helped aspiring writers find their voices and take their own passion and craft to the next level, and was rewarded with quite a bit of editorial and book design work that otherwise would have never come to me and was some of the most enjoyable work I’ve ever done.

Yet fourteen years later, there still isn’t a Meteor Mags comic book. Dracorex really scratched that itch, and I’m proud of it, and it was a BLAST collaborating with talented artists from three different continents who brought my vision for my evil, rampaging dinosaurs to life in the most amazing ways. But it was written as a series of six-page episodes—the length of “back-up” stories in comics from the 1970s—so I could gain some experience on smaller projects, and though it’s canon, there’s not a single appearance of Meteor Mags.

It’s also a goddamned expensive hobby, even considering that I kept costs down by doing all the writing, lettering, book design, and publishing myself. Just ask Robert Kirkman who nearly went bankrupt and maxxed out all his credit cards on an all-out gamble before striking pay dirt with Invincible and then Walking Dead.

That’s why I am posting this script here. I can’t get it drawn right now, but it’s a fun and action-packed sci-fi/fantasy romp with a “bad girl” vibe that deserves to be in print, and it’s my first full-length, 24-page script that also includes a synopsis of a proposed second issue to conclude the story and set up the next one.

I hope someday it’s in print.
