This is old news for some but way too many people didn’t get the memo: do not trust Matrix crypto. It’s not that they have issues (who doesn’t), it’s their approach which is the opposite of taking security seriously.

I'm currently trying to start a group chat. I don't want to use discord, but maybe something with similar features could be useful. So I hear [matrix] is probably the best alternative to that???? At least it's one I've heard about from being in the fediverse (which is annoying and at times complicated to use tbh, even after having cleared the biggest hurdle of getting started).

So then matrix.org tells me that the easiest way to start is to just join their big group. Which seems to defeat the purpose of being federated???

I have questions like: What are the pro's and con's of using the biggest instance/provider/whatever the heck it's called?

Is it going to be slower for being in a different country?

Will the privacy laws of different countries between provider and me and group members affect us?

Do I have to pay for making a group happen? Am I planning on "hosting" a group? Or does "hosting" mean something coding/programming related and not the social thing of "I'm the host and invite people over to my house as guests for a dinner party (except virtually)"? I DONT KNOW :MastoSob:

Would using the biggest provider be free but other providers cost money? (What exactly are they charging for? Using discord doesn't cost money, do these alternatives?)

Will people on matrix.org SEE my public group when they search for groups?

It's not impossible to find these things out despite not being a programmer, but like. Really fucking hard.

@adminforge Leider kann ich mit der iOS-App "Element Messenger" keinen neuen Account erstellen. Stattdessen muss ich die iOS-App "Element X" verwenden. Dort erhalte ich dann nach Eingabe des Homeservers 'nope.chat' den Hinweis, dass dieser aktualisiert werden muss.

Both are accessible without a phone number (which is becoming a much more sensitive high level metadata issue than most people realize yet)

Also both are federated instead of relying on a central server that could any time shut down, change conditions or get a target for a totaliarian state

Its like the classic postage mail delivery, where any delivery service brings letters to any house letterbox, no matter if the recipient has an contract

there are very few projects I've had around for months where I have a fairly okay understanding of how they work that still manage to make me so angry that I want to just rage delete them :neofox_what:​ congrats Synapse, you are really tempting me.

I looked into Matrix back in 2020 on a far more superficial level. Back then I simply wanted to know whether non-technical users can rely on Matrix for encrypted chats without shooting themselves in the foot.

What I found was a huge mess. The different Matrix clients all had very different capabilities, also when it came to encryption. It was pretty much a matter of luck whether your Matrix client could establish an encrypted connection to another Matrix client, whether it would do so by default and whether it would notify you in a useful way if it failed to encrypt the connection. Even the official Riot messenger didn’t perform well. There clearly were no baseline requirements, and expecting users to recognize whether they are secure or not just doesn’t work.

I later got a reply from the developers. I can only quote approximately since that was on Twitter so the conversation is lost now. It essentially boiled down to the fact that reliable encryption was never a design goal of the protocol. They wanted to give client developers the most flexibility. So client developers took that and largely implemented only the easy parts.

Putting a bunch of bridges into Matrix to try and centralize my messaging is really giving me Trillian/Pidgin vibes. :neofox_what:​ Except Trillian/Pidgin were way more straightforward (no shade to Matrix, it's not really what it's meant for).

It's depressing thinking back to when XMPP was super promising and companies were on board to implement it. Instead of that happening, they all teamed up to crush it and messaging has stayed the same level of fragmentation (or, depending on how you look at it, gotten worse) in the meantime.

Der #MatrixMessenger scheint einigermaßen zu leben, ich konnte mittlerweile einige Freunde dorthin einladen. Meinerseits dort @kuschelpony:catgirl.cloud

Guter Tipp dazu: den Benutzernamen nur in Kleinbuchstaben schreiben, manche Server haben sonst Probleme

#XMPP #Jabber wäre technisch auch sehr empfehlenswert, ist aber leider ziemlich still geworden. Könnte eine zweite Blüte bekommen wenn das in Mastodon integriert wird

Beide funktionieren #DatenSparsam anonym ohne Telefon

I LOVE #XMPP exactly because the clients like Gajim are just slim and functional, nowhere like the eye candy distractions and bloatware that people seem to accept these days

But its ok if people just prefer it, or if they love to play with modern "community building features"

All i wish is interoperability, like i can use my XMPP or #MatrixMessenger to write with people who are stubborn to have Telegram as the holy one and only messenger.

I ask, are there community run multi-protocol-servers?

I mean the way that i could set up an chatroom on them that is accesible for #XMPP users on an XMPP address,
for #MatrixMessenger user on an Matrix address,
perhaps also for these who prefer Telegram to connect to an Telegram bot an be part of the same chatroom,
perhpas also accessible as an #IRC server channel as well
