The London #sciencemuseum have a great collection of maths history. I saw: A liquid computer for economic differential equations; an old trig circular slide rule; and the analogue computer for tide predictions.
Good times all round, strongly recommend.

I encourage museums to explore their maths links because I think there are major opportunities to enrich teaching and learning in BOTH maths and history: it goes both ways.
And in exploring the other direction, I (along with my research partner Jason) did a project in which we taught a half-term of maths lessons according to the maths department's usual Scheme of Work, except we added History content to every lesson.

I'm in the @[email protected] cafe, having had a bit of a browse. They are *not yet* one of the Leeds museums I've got signed up for #CityOfMaths, but I'm hoping to wear them down eventually! If anyone wants to chat about the funding I've got for a #MathsInMuseums project I'm right here!

Today I contributed to a day of training for folks from museums across Scotland who are gearing up to take part in #MathsWeekScotland.
I was supposed to be giving the attendees ideas, but *they* were such an incredible source of inspiration, in terms of specific ideas but also with regards to attitudes and the general dream of the thing.

A colleague from the secondary school maths department I work in visited the Tate Modern today and took this photo of an artwork based on a mathematical idea.
There's more of this stuff than many people realise, and we should really be making more of it in our #museums and #galleries!

Working with #museums & #galleries to explore the #maths in their stories is always eye-opening.
Today, I've been reading about a #painting that was stored on a roller due to being too large to hang anywhere. The roller was 19ft long by 3ft in diameter, and the painting wound around this roller about 2 1/2 times.
What can you find out about the painting from this information?
Storing the painting in this way caused some damage so at some point it was decided to transfer it to a roller large enough that the painting wouldn't overlap itself. Of course, the painting is too fragile to figure out what size roller is needed by trial & error (and it's already damaged by this point, and the rollers aren't cheap), so they must've worked out what the new roller's diameter needed to be prior to swapping it.
What size roller do you think they ordered?
The documents I'm reading span a large enough amount of time that the units used to describe things change over time (and they're not always consistent even in reports contemporary to each other), so there are some conversions to do to check, verify & corroborate things.
None of this requires any mathematical knowledge beyond what's expected of a student taking GCSE maths at foundation level, and a lot of it would be perfectly accessible to many primary-age students.

This is an amazing quote, and what's even more amazing is that I understand that St Paul's Cathedral are planning family activities investigating this lovely link between #maths, #architecture and #dachshunds towards the end of the school holidays.
