I'm really impressed at how quickly my beige.party account got up to speed! Snagging an old export of people I follow from kolektiva filled my feed very quickly—and people were nice enough to follow me back again.

I honestly doubt that centralized social media could possibly match that.

This just increased my interest in working up a good flyer and bookmark to promote Fediverse adoption by more people. I just need to figure out what website to point to. The key factor is avoiding ANY of the techno-speak that causes the non-tech public's eyes to glaze over.

So:

No "instance". Call it a "home" if you call it anything. And DON'T EXPLAIN IT!

Get people into Mastodon first, I guess, but include a link for them to look up other Fediverse services as well.

I just want to increase the chances they won't automatically sign up on Mastodon.social.

I'm not thinking of hosting my own Mastodon instance just yet, but I wonder what the effects are on the continued growth (in quality as well as size) of one's network when moving to self-hosting.

One of the advantages I can see would be to tempt friends to join in who have been put off by the extremely low signal/noise ratio of traditional social media.

Any self-hosters care to comment?
