PLEASE; don't merely replicate birdsite practices here in Mastodonia. Use #hashtags. Use hashtags so that we can filter our feeds (in & out). This is fundamental to Mastodon, a way for everyone in the federated instances to craft a feed that is safe, non-triggering, and delight-inducing.

But it only works if *we all do our part* for our fellow Mastodonts.

Using Mastodon becomes a bit like when you know how to use the 3-4 things needed to take pics with your DLSR - but then find a need and lo! it's satisfied in the users manual.

I know this is confusing at first, but only because it's new. Don't spiral, and don't let others' confusion put you off!

The core principles:
*You can follow ANYONE, on any server, if you know their handle.
*You only need the HOME timeline, notifications, and search features to get started. Nothing else.
*Use hashtags liberally.

If you keep these three simple things in mind, you're ready to use Mastodon. Congratulations!

Level 102: Okay, but how do I FIND specific people I'm looking for? or new people who talk about the things I'm interested in?

1) Check people's #Twitter account to see if they give a Mastodon handle.

2) Check the Follows for people you're already following.

3) Look up hashtags. E.g. are you a lawyer? See who's talking about #law #legal #court

4) Some folks collect spreadsheets of users in specific fields. If you trip over one, check it out!

1) Find any instance. (Easy - if you can read this, you're already done!)

3) Check the HOME timeline only for now. Everything you're looking for is there.

4) Start posting and engaging!
