It's worth restarting that #MarsColonisation is not going to work in the foreseeable future, and probably not ever. The reason is that we are so utterly dependent on Earth's biosystems' services. Researchers have estimated that 75% of our wealth comes directly from natural ecosystems' in the form of goods and services that we cannot replicate. Eg: pollination, water filtration, clean oxygenated air, timber.
In other words, if we lose these services, we will lose 3/4 of our wealth.
But further than that, it's questionable whether we could even survive - that 3/4 of our wealth represents the most fundamental aspects of life. What is more important: clean air, or a new pair of jeans?
Another way to think about it - the climate crisis is a crisis of about 100 parts per million of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This is a problem that has so far been beyond us to address.
On Mars, the atmospheric problem is a million parts per million. The notion that we can "fix" it is fantasy.
Humans will remain on Earth, probably until we as a species are no more. Accepting this is vital so that we can direct our efforts to securing a livable future for ourselves and our descendents. #environment #sustainability #NaturalServices #progress
