  1. Leaving aside the issue of propulsion system for the #ADF #submarine acquisition and what type of platform is really needed, there is only one major issue left. And that is can they be built on time and within budget. Arguably and regretfully, the answer appears to be a unanimous (from two ot the @AUKUS partners concerned) NO.

"... a report on AUKUS published by the House of Commons defence committee last week is deeply alarming. The defence committee is government-chaired, so it has an incentive to play down potential sources of embarrassment for the Starmer government — which prepped King Charles to spruik AUKUS on his trip to the US — but it lays out a series of major problems for the UK contribution to AUKUS, especially around recruiting a sufficient workforce to build the new submarine." (Source; Crickey News)

"...the latest report from the US Congress’s independent Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on US naval construction is, if anything, even more alarming on the more immediate challenge of the lack of US submarines." (Source: Crickey News)

It begs the questions: 1) Is there a secret #AUKUSPlanB, and 2) If not, what does #Marles know that keeps him so confident about the outcomes for AUKUS projects?

  2. #Labor MPs quietly #alarmed by #Albanese’s response to #US-Israel #strikes on #Iran.

Several MPs question why the party rushed to endorse strikes that were likely in #breach of #internationallaw.

#Australia was among the first countries to publicly endorse the US and #Israel’s strikes via a statement from Albanese, #Wong & #Marles on the evening of Saturday, 28 February – a matter of hours after the attack. #auspol #WeakPM #TrumpRegime

  7. Asked about a report, which contemplates the #US not selling any #nuclearsubmarines to #Australia – as promised under #AUKUS, #Marles says there will be “a whole lot of commentary” on AUKUS.

    Marles said:

“We’re working with the #TrumpRegime, & we’ve heard #Trump make clear the position of the #UnitedStates in respect of this question, & he has said that we are full steam ahead in respect of this & it includes the transfer of the Virginia [class submarines].”

  12. CW: Puns not intended

Good, on the surface this looks like the ADF are finally wising up on how future wars will be waged, and how not to put our mariners at risk, but it also looks like face-saving announcement after repeated attacks on the wisdom of #AUKUS
And Minister #Marles we've heard the 'will be built locally' bollocks before 🤦‍♂️

  13. I do my best to watch the first QT of a new #Parliament. I did so today, and while the House was better behaved than in the past — a reflection of the polies’ ability to learn and adapt — I was unfortunately confronted with an #LNP in #Opposition still stuck in the bad old days, asking for Y/N answers to smarmy and erronious questions in order to elicit some ‘gotcha’ moments. Some polies never learn and are doomed to fail in adapting to new political realities. Surprised? No, but I wanted to be.

The overall comedic effect was more than helped along with #AngusTaylor ‘s debut (as LNP Shadow Minister for Defence) and his ill-conceived (or ill-informed or both) indignation at the PLA Navy circumnavigation of the continent — how dare they do to us what we do to them in international waters. That it was a ridiculous question is supported by the facts that this issue was discussed to death in the press and commented on by the govt when it occured and that this was not the first circumnavigation of Australia by the #PLANavy . I could say: “Do better Angus’ but I doubt he could.

One question stood out. #Marles was asked about a recent purchase of Russian oil by Australia. A question never answered. Marles’ obfuscation was plain and obvious to all. He barely filled his allotted time with repeats of support for #Ukraine.

Ah well, we have three years to get use to the agonising death of the LNP #Coalition. Not before time either.

  14. The Australian government has announced a new $100m assistance package for #Ukraine, which includes munitions and military equipment, during a visit to the country by the deputy prime minister, Richard #Marles.

#Australia’s package will include $50m in military assistance, including $30m towards uncrewed aerial systems, and $15m towards other high-priority equipment such as combat helmets, rigid hull inflatable boats, boots, fire masks and generators.
