I'm also fascinated by Maqam etc. Sami's book is a real contribution - compared to Western classical, jazz etc. there is precious little in English.
To get to grips better, I'm (principal inst. Sax) learning Nay with a Syrian musician (Mahamed Fityan).
I would welcome a discussion/ group etc. I have other sources.
