Like the violin or viola, it's a #fretless instrument, which means that beyond the standards of #Western #music, it can easily play any mode or scale such as #Oriental ones. #Tunisian #musician and #musicologist Jasser Haj Youssef, for example, has "imported" the viola d'amore to the art of the #maqâm, using the sympathetic strings to create a richer, deeper sound:
