  3. Though not orchestral #music, like previous posts in this thread, this piece features two of my favorite ethnic instruments, the Arabic/Turkic Zither (kanun) and the Oud. A lovely piece that sparkles. As one commenter put it: The Kanun singing poetry with the Oud. #WorldMusic #ArabicMusic youtu.be/ETOYzn5FV9g?si=SdVCCe

  9. This morning's #workout #music is from an artist I first heard when he came to #NM as a #refugee from #Iraq. Born in Baghdad, Rahim AlHaj wrote protest songs opposing Saddam Hussein's repressive regime. He was imprisoned twice, once for a year and a half, and was regularly beaten by his captors. In 1991, AlHaj was forced to leave Iraq.

  10. Self-Titled Summer | Abdel Aziz El Mubarak (1987, Sudan)

Next in our new Self-Titled Summer series is number 372 on The List, submitted by platenworm. Here are the deets, as they say:

    • Point(s) of origin: Abdel Aziz El Mubarak was born into a family of musicians in 1951 in Wad Madani, where he went on to study music at university and, by the mid-70s, had become a popular Sudanese singer (with a focus on love songs) and bandleader. His discographies on Discogs and Wikipedia do not match (and I’ve seen about three different release dates for this album), but this does not appear to be his first studio album. I believe he had already been touring internationally for around a decade by the time this album was released. Most if not all of the band members are also Sudanese.
    • Tasting notes: Sudanese and Arabic pop with an almost jazz-/swing band base – lovely tenor vocals backed by a tight 10-piece band that includes accordion, saxophone, tabla, and 4 violins.
    • Standout track: “Tarig Ash-shoag”, a 9.5-minute-long banger where both the vocals and saxophone really shine.
    • RIP: Abdel Aziz El Mubarak left us in 2019.
    • Websites: Wikipedia

    Happy listening!

  12. #Germany seeks to #deport #protesters

Submitted by webadmin on 9 April, 2025

"The German state has issued deportation orders for three #EUCitizens and one #American who have attended #ProPalestinian protests.

"Berlin immigration authorities issued the orders on 31 March, demanding that the four individuals leave Germany within one month or else face deportation. Their orders cite a protest in October 2024 in which masked individuals caused 'significant property damage, including #graffiti', as well as resisting arrest and calling a #police officer a '#fascist'.

"Unusually, three of the four orders also invoke the German principle of #Staatsräson, (“#StateReason”). This term originates from a speech #AngelaMerkel gave to the #IsraeliKnesset in 2008, asserting that #Israeli security was fundamental to the purpose of the German state.

"Staatsräson is not an officially defined term or codified anywhere in the German constitution or by German courts. At least two of the protestors are appealing the decision, with their lawyer telling Al-Monitor that it is a 'political concept, not a legal concept, and therefore unlawful'.

"In any case, the #deportation of #activists for #protesting should be opposed.

    #Khalil

"The activists’ lawyer has drawn parallels to the case of #MahmoudKhalil in the US. 'I see similarities… It is weaponization of #ImmigrationLaw as a tool to silence #PoliticalDissent'. Khalil’s case may also lead to a debate on interpretations of the US constitution’s #FirstAmendment.

"Back in February, #Berlin police broke up a protest, citing a ban on '#ArabicChanting', the playing of #ArabicMusic, or giving a speech in #Arabic. In October 2024, police raided the homes of five men, four of whom were being investigated over 'authorship of #antisemitic social media posts'.

    Clapping

"And after the joint Israeli-Palestinian documentary #NoOtherLand won an Academy Award, German culture minister Claudia Roth insisted that she was only clapping for Israeli director Yuval Abraham, not Palestinian director #BaselAdra. Several politicians, including the mayor of Berlin, called for her resignation. A torrent of public criticism was aimed at #YuvalAbraham for his acceptance speech, to which he responded: 'To stand on German soil as the son of Holocaust survivors and call for a ceasefire — and to then be labelled as antisemitic is not only outrageous, it is also literally putting Jewish lives in danger.'

"Israeli politicians cited German politicians when attacking the filmmakers themselves, and only weeks later, co-director #HamdanBallal was attacked by #IsraeliSettlers in the #WestBank, and removed from an ambulance by #IDF soldiers.

"German Staatsräson is less about assuring Israel’s right to exist, and more about giving a free hand to the #repressive policies of the Israeli right."

  18. Noel Kharman (نويل خرمان) – Mouthakerti (مذكرتي) (2023, Palestine/Jordan)

Our next spotlight is on number 500 on The List, submitted by ado.

If you’re cooler than me, you may have already heard of Palestinian singer and songwriter Noel Kharman (نويل خرمان) from her popular mash-up videos (some going back to almost 10 years ago) where she blends a Western song (in English, Spanish, or French) with an Eastern song (in Arabic or Turkish), as her cover of Adele’s “Hello” mixed with Lebanese star Fairouz’s “Keefak Enta” and Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” with Syrian musician Ahmad Al Maslawi’s “Akherran Galaha” have each gotten double-digit millions of views. Or, perhaps you caught wind of her via the music video for her first original track, “Ann Alawan“, sung from the perspective of her mother after they lost Kharman’s father; in the 3 years since the video was released, it has gotten 30 million views. As for me, putting on Kharman’s debut EP in order to write this spotlight was the very first I had ever heard of her. And I’m completely enchanted.

All the songs on Mouthakerti were co-written by Kharman, and are in Arabic. I haven’t been able to find English translations but thankfully each track has a video (either a lyric video or full music video), so it’s easy to pick up that these gorgeous songs are very personal, about life, love, and – as in the above-mentioned “Ann Alawan” – loss (…and, also, possibly falconry?). The tracklist below links to each respective video.

Kharman was born and raised in Haifa, but is now based out of Amman, Jordan. She just dropped a new single and video (with English subtitles) a couple months ago, “HAIFA” (حيفا), about her love and longing for her homeland. I believe it features her own grandmother singing at the end and, well, let’s just say tears have been shed.

Give this one a listen and keep an eye out for Kharman’s next release. She’s definitely one to watch.

  26. Its taken a while to post about Ismail Sabri Basha because of how scarce information is about him in English is and I always try to point people to available sources.

Born in Egypt, graduated from law in France, he was one of the 19th and 20th century literati who developed Neo-Classicist Arabic writing. If not for him, among others, Arabic music and literature would not be where it is today.
