Sweet gale, Myrica gale blooming in the sun

The tiny blooms of Diapensia laponica are a special treat for fieldwork in #Labrador. The stems are only 1-3cm tall. The little flowers look robust, but I've learned they only last a few days in the short northern summer.

Crab boats came in last night!

high of 11c and rainy. If it keeps the black flies down I'll take it!

Meanwhile the community gardens continue to grow. Great to see people claiming their space with personalized signs!

Day one of my second trip to #Makkovik #Labrador for this year. Discovered en route that the new OM-1 Mk2 that I used to make some spectacular photos in June is non-functional. Hopefully just a faulty battery, but unfixable until I return home in two weeks.
Luckily, in trimming my field kit down I decided to keep my Nikon Z50 on hand. It doesn't have the features of the OM, but I still love shooting with it. No image stacking, but the ability to turn on has become a 'killer feature' for this trip.

Realizing that none of my friends in #Makkovik are in the Fediverse, so I'm going to have to post these to FaceBook if they're going to see them :(

Local #Fishers Help Uncover #Coral Clinging to Underwater Cliffs https://eos.org/articles/local-fishers-help-uncover-coral-clinging-to-underwater-cliffs paper: https://ecologyandsociety.org/vol28/iss4/art4/
"5 years ago, Capt. Joey Angnatok, an #Inuit fisher and researcher, lowered his fishing nets into the #Labrador Sea near #Makkovik. Seafloor data suggested that the ocean should be 700 meters deep. But when he let out that much net, he still had several hundred meters of slack floating on the surface, indicating the nets had hit bottom earlier than expected."

Back in #makkovik . Not certain, but I think black fly season might finally be over

Tomorrow I'll start meeting community members to introduce myself, start sharing ideas about #inuit #botany, and see what kinds of research questions might be valuable to the people in #makkovik . It will take some time I'm sure; I'm pleased we were able to see some of the berry harvesting sites today, so I have a basic idea of how things are here. So much more to learn

The landscape here is spectacular, so lucky we had clear sunny skies and mostly calm water #makkovik
