"[For building our space projects] we only use open source tools, because we think that if you want to publish something open source, the tools also need to be open source, because everyone will be able to access it."

🚀 Back in December 2024 at #38C3, Paul Koetter & @librespace foundation’s Manthos Papamatthaiou shared the journey of #SIDLOC & Curium One, an open-source space experiment that launched aboard the Ariane 6 maiden flight! 🛰️
Check out their talk in the toot below.
I'm proud to be part of the Libre Space Foundation continuously working on open-source space hardware, software.

Two payloads of interest to the FOSS community were carried into space on the maiden flight of the Ariane 6 rocket. SIDLOC is a collaboration between the Libre Space Foundation and the ESA to develop an open, low-power standard for identifying and locating spacecraft. Curium One is a demonstration platform for satellites systems featuring 15 newly designed open-hardware PCBs:

Libre Space Foundation is a non-profit, community-driven effort to create FOSS space technologies. Starting with SatNOGS - a global network of DIY satellite ground stations - projects include creating and deploying the world's first FOSS satellite, develop machine learning for satellites, and more. I especially like the idea of installing SatNOGS on a Raspberry Pi (or perhaps an old laptop?) to create your very own ground station at home!

I'm starting a new series on my blog: "FOSS IN SPACE"
Every Friday I will highlight four resources from the world of free/libre software, hardware, and ideals that are building the next Space Age:

hosted a workshop building antenna/groundstation last week during #fab24. After many hours of debugging the groundstation at #Fablab Puebla/Idit is now live on #satnogs (Open Source global network of satellite ground-stations) and the first results are visible.

Progetti come #LibreSpace Foundation e #LibreCube permettono a chiunque di partecipare all'esplorazione dello spazio!
Ma quanto è astronomico?
