  1. i think i shared this before but this music can't be shared often enough. my first encounter with african music. rockpalast was a very famous german tv and radio show. they always attempted to bring fantastic musicians who were still somewhat unknown in germany. they always had one night with a brodcast of three of these concerts. this evening here was particularly great. i heard joe jackson and band for the first time who left me totally enthused. and then came my first african music ever: king sunny adé. i was stunned. this was a time before internet so foreign music was only availabe if you knew it and could ask for it in the record stores. and you could only know it if it was broadcasted on the radio or on tv; radio gave a bigger chance back then to listen to unknown stud, particularly in the WDR.
i recorded this concert but of course the cassette has given up the ghost during the past 40 years. cassettes are not made to last this long.

but luckily we have internet nowadays. and here i can watch it and listen to it again: king sunny ade and his african beats on the rockpalast night in 1983

  2. way back, when being young was still a problem there were these tv and radio shows in west germany, made by the wdr: rockpalast. nights with bands relatively unknown in germany but often with great repute internationally. great music most of it. my friends and me always gathered at one of our places then and watched tv all night. since this was also a radio show we also always recorded the music. we connected as many tape recorders to a radio as possible (i. e. two) and tried to get the best record of the broadcast. since it always were only two tape decks and we were 3 to 5 eager listeners we had to fight for who was to get the "original" recording and who had to cope with a later second rate copy. with zz top and roger chapman & the short list e.g. i had to give in to this second rate records. with king sunny adé nobody competed me. we had never heard african music before so we didn't expect much. but afterwards i had to fight for this cassette.

this concert was my first encounter with african music and it stayed until now! the cassette though was eaten by a vicious cassette player in my car some ten years later. so praise for the internet!
