With implications for #JezeroBrightRocks, a revisit of Nili Fossae regional minerals and mapped units.

From last December: a new iteration on the #JezeroBrightRocks studies (previously https://mastodon.social/@sharponlooker/114042437186059919), this time with comparison to Earth's analogs. It still doesn't extend beyond sol 1000 (Neretva Vallis) so it doesn't cover the CRISM detections around Pico Turquino/Seattle Park (fig. 7)

[Under the Martian #tropics ...] There was a time when #water abounded and shaped the Martian #landscapes. This is evidenced by several fragments of clear, alumina-rich #rocks recently analyzed by the instruments of the #Perseverance rover ...
These rocks contain minerals such as #kaolinite, one of the markers of a once habitable environment. Infos+ : https://www.irap.omp.eu/en/2025/02/could-mars-have-had-a-tropical-climate-in-the-past/

Fuck yeah #MinCup24 time!! 🎉🎉
Also, #kaolinite may be classic and will probably win (and will probably be what spouse votes for), but I went for #abelsonite.
Listen I may only be a lay person who doesn't understand all the science, but it's an organonickel. Science thinks the organic part is *chlorophyll* even tho it forms at depth, according to mindat. How fucking cool is that?!

It's neck-and-neck between #Zircon and #Calcite in the #MinCup23 semi-final!
Zircon has knocked out my favorite #Kaolinite the past two years, and so, as revenge, I'm voting for it so it can win and be ineligible to compete in future MinCups!
(I'm sure it has some fine qualities that others will be happy to recite, but I'm driven solely by tactical considerations).

Congratulations and welcome to #MinCup23 Round 3, #Zircon!
For the second year running, the resilient timekeeper has outlasted the industrial softy. Better luck next year, #Kaolinite!

Because of the real properties of #Kaolinite, Boettger (building on Tschirnhaus) was able to produce real porcelain, rather than trying to fake alchemical results that would expose him as a fraud.
All brought to you by the "clay mineral and industrial superstar" kaolinite, which is facing off against zircon in the first match of Round 2 of #MinCup 23.
Kaolinite is awesome! Vote Kaolinite!

Very much a "fool me once..." type of guy, the Elector of Saxony demanded that the process be replicated and the results inspected, and a commission was duly established. Boettger's porcelain passed.
The initial products were red and black "stoneware", but the process for making hard-paste porcelain was quickly refined, and Boettger and his workers were soon capable of making fine, white, translucent, china.
#Kaolinite for the win!

Yeah, yeah, #Zircon tells time...
But #Kaolinite saves lives!
Or, at least one life.
When mixed with the right ingredients and fired at high heat, kaolin clay turns into #porcelain. Understanding this process turned an alchemist facing death for fraud into the first head of the legendary #Meissen porcelain factory. 1/
Follow along, and vote #Kaolinite, #histodons

#MinCup23 Round 2 Match 1:
Industrial superstar #Kaolinite battles geochronoloy’s resilient stalwart #Zircon. Will the Time Lord outlast another opponent, or will clay slip into Round 3?Vote: https://www.mineralcup.org/2023/campaigns/campaigns/round-2-match-1

A little less than 40 minutes left to go. Which mineral will win? Vote, vote, vote! #MinCup23 #Moissanite #Kaolinite
-
@TarkabarkaHolgy It looks like #Kaolinite fans are #MinCup veterans who started their campaign strong (some even early to recruit support over the last few days!), while #MinCup23 newbie #moissanite took longer to find fans outside those who have worked with it before

We're into the final few hours of voting in the first match of #MinCup23
Who will be the first mineral to go through to Round 2? It's looking close at the moment. Cast your vote here: https://www.mineralcup.org/2023/campaigns/campaigns/campaigns/round-1-match

#moissanite #kaolinite -
Today's #MinCup23 match is kaolinite vs moissanite. Both are fascinating minerals.
From a folklore standpoint, moissanite doesn't yield much information, but kaolinite, being an essential part of porcelain, has a whole lot of Chinese legends attached to it.
In one, a kind-hearted potter learns how to glaze his porcelain wares from the daughter of an immortal whom he saves from a giant snake.

Not sure what to vote for in match 1 of #MinCup23? Here's a summary:
#Moissanite
SiC
Name: after Henri Moissan, who discovered it in Canyon Diablo Meteorite
Natural occurrence: as presolar grains in meteorites; in kimberlites (origin: Earth's mantle)
Neat fact: changes color when heated
#Kaolinite
Al2(Si2O5)(OH)4
Name: derived from Gaoling, China
Natural occurrence: widespread weathering product of Al-Si minerals
Neat fact: used in prehistoric times for pottery

For the first round in #MinCup23 I voted for #kaolinite.
The whole concept of a lithophane made using porcelain just blew my mind. A lithophane is a thin carved sheet of porcelain that creates an image when back-lit.

I used to have a set of #kaolinite dinnerware, but now it's just mullite. #Moissanite can take the heat -up to 2500°C. #MinCup23
