How Can You Tell If A Spinel Is Real?
At-home clues (not proof):
🔍 Look for bubbles — Glass imitations often have gas bubbles or swirl marks under a 10x loupe. Natural spinel may have crystals, fingerprints, or fractures—but never bubbles.
🔍 Check the sparkle — Spinel has good brilliance but its "fire" is lower than diamond. If it flashes rainbow colors like a diamond, it's likely CZ or glass.

Recent developments in ruby land are converting ruby / rails programs into tiny compiled source in a few popular languages.
(Thought this would be of interest to you
@jadehopepunk!)
Recent development, Matz has been working on a tiny compiled ruby (called Spinel) and more recently it's been folded into Roundhouse.
Roundhouse README:
Roundhouse reads Ruby source — specifically, Rails applications — and produces standalone projects in other target languages. The deployment target (Rust or Swift binary, TypeScript bundle, Crystal or Go service, Elixir OTP app, Kotlin/JVM or C#/.NET service, Python project, browser bundle, or Spinel-compiled Ruby) becomes a compiler flag rather than a runtime choice.
The projects are still in early development, but it looks like my ruby code maybe dont need to be eliminated from future planning around self hosting apps on smaller raspberry pi like local hosting devices.

sad spinel at weird angle.
of course i had to do bisexual lighting because it was too long since i did that. no good reason for it though lol

ok maybe i did not *completely* forget how to draw
Testing Spinel (from RubyKaigi 2026) in real conditions 👇
Idiomatic Ruby → breaks (chaining, constants)
Explicit Ruby → works
Complex logic → unstable
👉 Today it’s “Ruby written like C”
Not ready for contests like AtCoder, but a very interesting direction for Ruby performance.

...x viewer lol
Having those two in one picture makes no sense whatsoever, except to someone like me, who is masquerading as a multishipper but is actually a selfshipper in disguise lololol
I named the ship between those two as "EveryoneIsGayForUsShipping". Self explanatory I think.

I would not want to be the waiter in this situation.
My most important headcanon about Spinel is that he wears pink socks. I will die on this hill, no one can change my mind
Once again, welcome to spineltober, a made up month long challenge during which I will draw as many unhinged Spinels as possible, (so hopefully everyday, we will see if i can keep up). If you do not want to see the unhinged spinels feel free to mute #spineltober
since this is also spooktober, this one is scared:
@Furiarossa is posting crying Lysandres for inktober, so inspired by that I will be posting deranged Spinels

#Ringwoodite is a second chance for #Spinel (which lost out to #Vivianite earlier). Ringwoodite has the chemistry of olivine (Mg2SiO4) but the crystal structure of spinel (MgAl2O4).
Okay, #vivianite is cool (and in the lead, I see) and all. But #spinel! Older than earth! That got me. Like we expect that from quartz and diamond and what's that other fucker, but spinel! It seems so omnipresent yet unassuming... and bam the more you know.
via @MineralCup
Opaque #spinel is the main aluminum-bearing mineral in the Earth's upper mantle. Here surrounded by pale olivine brown orthopyroxene and green clinopyroxene.
#MinCup24 Round 1 Match 8: #Spinel vs #Vivianite
Spinel makes gems and has some interesting geophysical stories to tell but I have to give the art vote to Vivianite -a pigment in the gorgeous blues of the Pacific NW peoples (including Tshimshian & Haida) & some European medieval, through 18th century paintings, Māori tattoos, Wiru masks from PNG.
#MinCup 24 ROUND 1 MATCH 8: #Vivianite vs #Spinel
Is it the popular Lady of Darkness formed by chemical reactions in the presence of decomposition, or is it the ubiquitous and gemmy mineral found everywhere from the mantle to meteorites older than earth?
Which will you choose?

This is a redraw of my old mashup between Harley Quinn (Batman) and Spinel (Steven Universe). It's a fun character. And I might have found a ink brush I actually like!
