@wizard at the risk of being pedantic, hackers have mainly been advocating not for moving to GitLab.com, but moving to community-hosting of #GitLab (or other code forge software like #Gogs, #Gitea, #Kallithea etc):

I've been letting my servers run on auto pilot a bit too long, only using updates once in awhile reacting to email alarms lately. I didn't have a full appreciation for how many web crawling bots have been hitting them. In particular my #mastodon instance and my #kallithea repositories. The #SemRush bot was particularly nasty, but #ahrefs and #baidu were also pretty aggressive.

I was getting 500 errors once in awhile on mastodon because of it but didn't clue in until kallithea crashed...

@Gargron you should host #Kallithea or #GitLab or something like that there and move your source repository there

@adfeno @teslas_moustache why isn't #Kallithea using #AGPL? Straight #GPL seems like a strange choice for a server-side package.

#libremonday was a thing here for awhile at least so I think I'll do that again.

A topical suggestion given recent #github news is #kallithea as a self hosted alternative.

The project is stewarded by the Free Software Conservancy rather than a corporate venture like #gitlab seems to be, and it can manage both Git and Mercurial repos. Was pretty easy to install for me anyways
