  2. The robes’ deep indigo folds pool at the actor’s feet, their gold embroidery catching light like scattered coins. His clenched teeth press into the prayer beads, suggesting a spell held in fragile suspension—what tension lingers in that single, suspended breath?

TIL I learned not only have now TWO #StudioGhibli films been adapted to traditional #Kabuki (with fan approval), but also … #LupinTheThird?!

It's like #SunRa told the Arkestra, playing the Old Masters isn't about copying the NOTES or the SOUND of the Old Masters, it is about copying their INTENTION, and what was shocking in 1926 doesn't cause much fuss in 2026.

  5. I was interested to find that Princess Mononoke is being adapted into a Kabuki theatre version. I must say that it fits the genre. I would have liked to see the Nausicaa Kabuki they did before.

  6. Today's distraction: another recuperation stroll, and then Kokuho at the Filmhouse.

Heard good things, has been enormous at the Japanese box office, so should take my mind off impending treatment for a while!

  9. abduzeedo: Utopia Tokyo: Interactive Web Design Meets Japanese Masks. “The core of the site is a collection of 14 Japanese masks — Samurai, Oni, Hannya, Tengu, Kitsune, Kappa, Noh, Kendo, and more. Each mask is rendered as a highly detailed 3D object. They appear in a grid layout with animated frame corners that pulse like targeting reticles. Clicking a mask opens a detail panel with cultural […]

  10. Kabuki’s female roles have been played by men for centuries. After the success of kabuki film “Kokuho,” a young actor is set to show Europeans how these enigmatic characters are brought to life onstage. japantimes.co.jp/culture/2026/ #culture #stage #kabuki #kokuho #nakamuratakanosuke #onnagata

  11. No Kengo photos so far because 1) it rained in the morning so no walking 2) I went to see, finally, "Kokuho (国宝)a Japanese movie which opened in Georgia this weekend.
It was a gorgeous, spectacular, dramatic, cinematographic, historical, artistic, etc. movie in the Kabuki world about two Kabuki actors and their lives. It's long, almost 3 hours, and those who need but don't like subtitles may find it tiring. The most amazing thing is that the two main actors are NOT kabuki actors and had to train for 1.5 years. Simply amazing.
I missed the title screen and also I didn't want to infringe on copyright, so the photos are the Toho company logo title and one early scene from the movie.
