As a very young man in Berlin, for a few years I was hopelessly in love with a wonderful young woman, unrequited. We were close for a while, of sorts, then lost contact. Life took both of us away to different countries. Many decades later we met again, in Berlin, she visting her mother, I visiting my father. By God's grace we became friends. Then we lost contact again, as these things go.

Our first reconnection after all those decades was in Berlin Friedenau, on a sunny summer day. We looked for a shaded place to sit down and ended up in the Cemetery Schoeneberg III nearby, a lovely, peaceful place. It is also the place where the great Marlene Dietrich is buried. So we spent a few moments by her grave, our great exile compatriot.
