Joan Armatrading
Track Record
A&M 1983Ok. One more. I just flipped this one in the rack and had to play it. The As seem to be very 80s heavy I must say. ‘Drop The Pilot’ is a perfect pop song I think. And the whole album is so tight in terms of song writing. Most tracks are produced by Steve Lillywhite which I’m not sure I knew back then, but it explains why I like it so much. I have a feeling Joan could have been way more appreciated than she ever was. Maybe I’m misremembering but I don’t think she got the recognition she deserved.
Anyway, the last A. I’ll move on to Bs, but not tonight.

Hunting High And Low
WB 1985Ok, so I’ve had this for years. Decades. And I always thought it was ok, a snapshot of the time. And that groundbreaking video of course. But the recent Record Store Day re-release made me have a re-listen.
Have I had a revelation? Do I now see it in a different light? No. If anything it’s even more firmly rooted in the 80s and if you told me it was Howard Jones (especially Train Of Thought) I wouldn’t question it. But there we are, the soft spot. There is no accounting for the soft spot. I can’t sell this one, it’s staying, like 99% of the records I’ve looked at so far 😮💨
I might move on to the Bs soon. Perhaps one more from the A section and no, don’t worry, I won’t expose you to the ABBA albums I also can’t seem to get rid of.

The Art Of Noise
Who’s Afraid Of…!
ZTT (Island) 1984If I remember rightly this was something like 25p in a charity shop many years ago. Side 1 has some very small paint blobs on, hence the low price, which I haven’t had the energy to try and remove, but the rest of it plays superbly.
I liked The Art Of Noise in 1984 as a kid, it probably introduced me to avant garde experimental music, and I must say I still like them. Like a lot of stuff from the 80s, playing them on equipment I could only have dreamt of owning back then is like hearing them for the first time.

Adam And The Ants
Kings Of The Wild Frontier
CBS 1980I always thought Adam and indeed his Ants never got the serious recognition they deserved. 1980 was prime music hero band worship era for me and I adored all of Adam’s records. Antmusic is unlike anything I’d heard before or since really. And aside from the well known singles there are some really well crafted and complex tracks here, Feed Me To The Lions and Ants Invasion are prime examples. This album along with Prince Charming and the earlier Dirk Wears White Sox are essential new wave / post-punk listening I think.
