@chrysn
@jschwart @[email protected]Pref64 is the preferred method to communicate the translation prefix.
Either the stub resolver synthesizes the AAAA record and the app uses the IPv6 destination or the CLAT uses the A record and a translation happens at the host.
Pref64 is used in all new #IPv6mostly deployments I have encountered so far.

At the brink of #CLAT on the desktop, this allows for #IPv6mostly access networks.
But on the other hand it will mask over #IPv6 issues as there is the Legacy IP fall back.
How do you think about this?

@geerlingguy
Seeing such a statement from you, makes me really sad.To add to @tubsta 's message. I'm running #IPv6only on all but one VLAN. Every device I buy has to either work are does not get onboard.
I write to services I care if they have a broken or not existent #IPv6
Services and providers that don't move get behind. The world is already an #IPv6 world even in the US. Everyone who tells you otherwise has no clue.
Just coming from a conference with #IPv6mostly WIFI 75% v6

It is still a experimental version, not released yet. (Build 29599.1000 )
(now you can use several windows hosts in one network segment with clat)

same procedure with ee.co.uk:
#ee provides also #ipv6only mobile access
and
#iOS is so smart for doing #ipv6mostly for #hotspot

Checked it the afternoon again. Nobody else seems to run the windows preview here 😩

#DNS64 #NAT64

DAD works, but nothing more.
Or in other words: At the moment it is not possible to use more than one Windows-PC with IPv6-mostly-support (Preview only ) in a IPv6-mostly or IPv6-only Network.
By accident a host may use one of the other mapped IPv4 addresses (out of 192.0.0.0/29) . But in general it takes the first one anywhere.
and W.B. is right: MS has to fix that problem before it gets released for the masses

It seems to me, they need more testers.

I have seen #39c3 provides #ipv6 #ipv6mostly #ipv6only
Please try it with windows 11 preview version, if you can!
These instructions should help.

Das WLAN des Hotels/der Konferenz kann's nicht. ☹️
Wer #IPv6mostly hier ausprobieren möchte, einfach in meine Nähe stellen 🤗

for the record:
#macOS behaves as expectedit doesn't use IPv4-lease from the iPhone,
instead it does clat (464xlat) -

@samd There are three main issues with going IPv6 only:
- Legacy clients won’t be able to reach you.
- You won’t be able to reach some services.
- Some software may not work well with IPv6.It’s technically possible to use only IPv6 for a lot of stuff, but if you care about being reachable from anywhere you would still in 2025 probably need some sort of translation layer at your network’s edge.
Check out #IPV6Mostly for a softer approach that is less likely to break things: https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-link-v6ops-6mops-00.html
